if you have a large number of text in your phone delete them so empty your inbox and sent folders.

Where is the precedent for full inboxes causing problems with tones? If the phone wasn't capable of receiving messages due to memory shortage, it wouldn't just stop giving notifications, it would also stop receiving.

There must be another cause, but with the limited information offered there isn't much to troubleshoot. It could be somthing that will be put right by a simple factory settings reset, otherwise (again with limited info to go on), try backing up the phone data and either updating the software or reformatting the phone.

this is an has been quite a common problem for no message alert which im sure you are aware of
and as pointed out limited info given
so the first simple way is to give the first simple answer before anything else can be said until we get some more info from the person
