question to nokia - so easy to answer, but will they?

[ Edited ]

Since v2.0 on n97

* Some people are able to see letters on the dailpad. This maybe region specific as not all countries use or require it.

Can you fill us in NOKIA?

There is no guarantee that you will get an answer from nokia themselves as this is primarily a user to user forum, not an official means of contacting nokia.  The nokia staff here are moderators which are here to look after the board and volunteers (in their spare time) who are under no obligation to answer anything.  To get answers directly from nokia use the "contact us" link near the top of the page.

To answer your question, which has already been covered elsewhere on these boards previously:

The NAM variant (the version sold in North America and several other countries)  of the phone has had the letters added.  The variants sold in other parts of the world have not had them added.

The reason the NAM version got them is because in America phone numbers are often advertised as words.  For example an advert may show a number as "1-800-BUYME" instead of "1-800-28369".  The decision was taken to add them after a high number of complaints from that region about this issue.

It's mainly America that still advertises like this but it's unknown why they just didn't add the letters to all variants.  The letters would be useful to other people in other countries for things like telephone banking.  My guess is that they didn't receive many complaints about the issue from other countries.

Re: question to nokia - so easy to answer, but will they?

We have removed a number of posts from this thread brcause it descended into a mud-slinging fight between several users, which will not be tolerated on this forum.

The Nokia 'greenbadge' staff who are active on  the boards are here voluntarily to try to assist users with specific issues in much the same way as our civilian users do. From time to time, your questions may be seen by a Nokia employee from a department that deals with your specific issue may be able to go the extra mile and resolve an issue for you directly, but Nokia Support Discussions is not an official support channel, and so questions of this type cannot be answered.

Nokia employees are active on the boards are offering their personal advice and opinions, they are not speaking on behalf of Nokia and cannot make official statements on behalf of Nokia. From time to time, we do receive official statements concerning issues that affect our members, in which case these statements are published,  but it not possible to respond directly to all general questions here.
