nokia 5310 - "Unable to retrieve phone information"

I just got my phone last week and I have been doing some research on how to update my phone.

1) I live in the US.
2) I did everything from installing the PC Suite to restoring factory memory.

Can somebody please tell me a step by step on how to update my phone?

I know that the US updater is broken of something like that, except I don't think this message is supposed to be popping up. =[
