i do believe youre talking about the N97 on v10.
the n97 not connecting to pc suite etc is a known issue and was corrected on v11
which i think youre trying to update to?
heres the trick:
1. power off the n97
2. with the device still turned off connect the usb cable
after a few seconds the device should begin to charge
3. with the usb still connected turn the power on
4. the device should now give the option on the main screen "PC suite Mass Memory......"
5. connect via pc suite then update your device to v11 using nsu to correct the usb connection
issue....
this advice is given under the assumption that the device youre speaking of is the N97.....

Hey Guys
I am in a soup. I upgraded my E71 software to 1.7.3 and everything was fine however after restart i lost all my contacts and messages(sms) etc except the data like pictures and vids on the memory card.
everything was fine earlier - but the software upgrade did not mention i would need to back up the data or did not ask before it wiped off my contact info clean.
anyone know how to retrieve this lost data..i have almost 2000 contacts info lost

This is really strange. Firmware upgrade procedure via NSU or FOTA don't wipe user data. You have lost all you data so now if you have backup then you can retrieve your data. Without backup, you can't get back your data. There are memory card and SIM card data recovery softwares available on net. You can try that but you can't get back your mobile's C drive data like contacts and messages.
It is not strange. It is true that usually you don´t lose any date when upgrading through FOTA. BUT if you upgrade using NSU you´ll lose your data! You are even told to make a backup of your data before the updating procedure starts!
One thing is true though, the data that was wiped is lost forever if it wasn´t previously backupped. The memory card stays intact if you update your firmware...so does the SIM card... Once again, try to do more accurate research!
