Re: e70 firmware upgrade

What version did you have in your E70 before the upgrade?

Did you try to remove the battery and put it back?

Re: e70 firmware upgrade

I had 1.0610.05.06 15-05-06 Firmware on my phone. I started the update and monitored it all the time.
Durin the period when the test software was running, the windows side of program told me that connection was lost. The instructions tell me to reboot my phone. So I did this and now I'm left with Nokia logo flashing on and off on the screen.

So tomorrow my whole work day will be used to get this to nearest nokia service.

Re: e70 firmware upgrade

I'm just wondering what happened there. It seems that for some reason during the software test it lost connection with PC. Might be that the software program failed or?

Imho the tester software should have some output on the screen to tell the used how far has it progressed so far and what's the name of the current test. I know this isn't much used for the user but it would be good feedback during these first steps of development?

Also that notice that came from the updater software wasn't really that clear. First you get lots of warnings not to touch the phone during updating and then you tell the user to take the battery off. This isn't really logical.

I'm wondering what would have happened if I would have ignored the instructions to disconnect the battery and just waited for the test program to do something. Or even press the "retry" button without pulling the battery out.

Re: e70 firmware upgrade

I experienced exactly the same today. I had the same firmware. The phone is now on its way for maintenance.

Has anyone successfully upgraded the E70? What firmware version was installed and what was fixed? -Nicolas

Re: e70 firmware upgrade

And exactly the same thing has just happened to me. I wish I'd seen this thread before I started the upgrade ...

Firmware version before I started the upgrade was 1.0610.05.06 15-05-06.

Yes, can we *please* have changelogs published for each upgrade. It makes a huge difference for those of us trying to explain to the general public/readers why and when they chould upgrade their firmware....

Re: e70 firmware upgrade

I assume this was for the Nokia site's software update section???

Sounds silly, but did you foolow the instructions to the letter? Was the USB cable connected directly to the PC, or via a hub? Was the computer being used heavily for anything else during the upgrade? (it's recommended not to run anything else until it's completed)

I won't even answer to your questions, because it's pretty clear that the software clashes during test run and looses connectivity because the phone isn't responding anymore.

Then syvanen I take that to mean the answer to one or more of my questions is YES.

These are common reasons for FW failure, not just on phones, but PDA's. Hence my simple questions. I don't see what the issue with answering them is!

Oh and I missed out firewall too. It's the most common cause of killing devices during fw upgrades, and the PDA forum I frequent is full of people slagging FW as duff when they bork their upgrade!

Re: e70 firmware upgrade

Updated via the Nokia site's software update section.
Phone was connected directly with the usb cable. No hub attached between it. Before running the update I connected the power adapter to make sure nothing could go wrong. Followed the instructions exactly. no other programs where running, even windows was just up for 5 minutes max.

I know I'm not the only one. On a dutch forum several more people have the same problems.

Re: e70 firmware upgrade

getsurfers you can take it as you want. Lecturing us about firewalls, usb hubs etc isn't going to help us a one bit.

If you really want to know the details, Software update was the only thing running besides all the other programs which normally run in the background. No I did not play firewall nor would it matter as data isn't directly downloaded from the net into the phone.

So please, stop lecturing unless you can really help or give an insight into this problem. From which you don't seems to have no first hand experience, just lots of "forum experience in first hand"

Sorry if I sound rude, but your input isn't helping right now.

Re: e70 firmware upgrade

Does sound a bit silly. Since when should making a little mistake result in a phone going dead before your eyes? I followed every instruction to the detail and was left with the same problem as all the other guys (and galls?) on this forum.
From my point of view (software developer from Holland) you just don't put updates on Internet for thousands to download without proper escapes from disaster.

A [software] firewall stops traffic types, not just between your PC and the net, but locally too - and USB is a common one stopped. Unless you turned it off, then your firewall would have been automatically started by windows, and running in the background (talking software such as Windows Firewall, Norton/Mcafee firewall/security suites etc etc). Hence why many have to add programs such as activesync and Nokia suite to a list of allowed apps, otherwise they fail.

My N80 would keep getting lost by windows UNTIL I added Nokia suite to list of allowed apps on my firewall.

Firewalls, again are the biggest cause of lost devices, or data interuption.

Anyway, if your phone is dead, then you need to get it to your nearest NSC. This is your only way of getting it working again. If you beleive this is a common flaw, then you need to report this to Nokia using the contact form. Nokia support do not read these forums, only users and mods.

Re: e70 firmware upgrade

My E70 was connected directly to my PC (no hub), th ePC was doing nothing else, and there is no software firewall at all on the PC (there is of course a hardware firewall between the PC and the internet, but that's not relevant to the PC->E70 USB connection).

If this problem is just due to user error it seems odd that all these failures are being reported here just for the E70. Seems much more likely to me that there is some incompatibility between the original E70 firmware and the updater.

Re: e70 firmware upgrade

Wow. I was just getting ready to flash my E70 when I noticed I was on the Asia site for the download and I thought I'd better check the forums to make sure it doesn't load with Chinese language or an unknown alphabet and I then saw all these posts about the firmware update going bad. Has anyone been able to update their E70 yet? Maybe it's just three or four people out of a thousand, in which case I'll try it, but I'd like to hear a success story or two before I take the plunge. Anyone do it yet?

Regards
