I have just reset my fone hard and soft everything was deleted because i had previous problems with it. I will NEVER get a nokia again.

What have you actually downoaded?

From what little information you provided, I'm guessing you are trying to open an EXE file (either installer file for Nokia Software Updater or you've pulled an unofficial copy of a Nokia data pack from a dodgy suite). Either way, you are blaming Nokia for your own lack of research on how to update.

You don't say what phone model phone model you have, but some phones from the last couple of years can be updated directly over internet connection to the phone. If you have a Series 60 3rd Edition like N86 or N96, type *#0000# to see current software details then select Options>Search for updates. On some Series 60 5th Edition models, this is even easier, just go to Menu>Applications>Software updates.

If neither of these options yields any results then you need to install either Nokia Software Updater or Ovi Suite on PC running Windows XP, Vista ot 7; both can be downloaded here:

These download software updates and install them to the phone.

If you never buy antoher Nokia, that's up to you, but whatever you buy, if you take rash actions in ignorance as you seem to here, then you could cause yourself problems with a phone of any make - it is no good blaming the manufacturer if you jump in where angels fear to tread...

Im trying to install software update the latest one, through software update in applications, when i do this is says it cannot do it and then links me to the official nokia website which i click and update through that. I download it and click file manager and open and then it says wrong file format.

I just read your bottom statement. Its well documented problems with n97, half my apps were corrupt so i had to reset whole phone and i do not know if you have the n97but i cannot believe how slow it is, sometimes i click a button and i have to wait 2 seconds before it reacts, if this happens once i would forget to either mention this but this happens on a daily basis. Their are quite a few other problems so the information that i did not provide about the reasons i may not purchase another Nokia, does not mean they are not there and i am an idiotic 13 year old. People make too many assumptions on the internet, i understand i may have sounded like a young ignorant person but so does so many people because there is only so much perception you can read from a few paragraphs on the internet. Plus people use ignorant too often imo, it means to act dumb, if i genuanly am stupid in this area, than im not ignorant, which is what you sounded like you thought of me, generally un-knowledgeable. But you see, im probably wrong about what i thought you thought of me, why? because its a paragraph, and i read it in a monotone manner which makes a difference in how people can perceive things like sarcasm or just been plain nice.  Dont judge.

I wrote all that because i read so many bitchy comments to other people on the web everyday and its rediculous, cant we all just get on with what we were going to do.

PS Please respond to help me .. but if you choose not to, its fine, not one else is responding and you could be my only hope...bit dramatic.. but yeah. Thanks for reply

I didn't think you sounded like a child, but the way you were talking in your first post was not exactly the way somebody who needs help wins friends and influences people.

OK, I have a clearer picture but I still think you are downloading an EXE file to your phone, which is why you are not succeeding.

What exactly is the message when the update first fails? Is it telling you that there has been a problem or that the update cannot be done? The reason I ask that some updates occasionally have to be done via the PC.

When you get redirected to the software update page, what exactly is it that you have downloaded? It is not possible to download software updates as a source file to the phone and then install them directly, the update app (if it had worked) would have downloaded and installed in one shot.

Therefore, you need to look in File Manager at the file you have downloaded. What is it called? I'm guessing you have something like "NokiaSoftwareUpdaterSetup_en.exe" or "Nokia_Ovi_Suite_webinstaller.exe" - neither of which is intallable on your phone, you'd install these on your PC then use it to manage the software update of the phone via the PC.

Let us know for certain the name of the file you downloaded and we'll help you further.

Ok it says "Unable to install the n97 2.1 software update. To update your device using your pc, visit bla"

I dont know how i would update through my pc, im sure its easy, i definatley know i never ever had to do this before.

The name of the files you said were right. "Nokiasoftwareupdatesetup_EN(1)EXE.

Sorry about all that earlier, there was no intention to be all angry i was jus illustrating my disdain at nokia because ... well it doesnt matter now.

No worries, good to know you are finally sorted - you should now be able to update via PC. To be honest, this is often a better method, because you get the full new software version whereas updates direct to the phone are just patches.

Make sure you back up your phone data (contacts, messages, media files etc.) before using NSU to update.
