Whats new in v5.50 for nokia 6300?

I have updated my nokia 6300 firmware to latest version 5.5 and its working quite nicely. I haven't identified any problem or bug after update. But I am not sure what new features have been added or what is different in v5.5 from the previous v5.0. In my opinion, there should be a list of "Whats new in latest version" available along with the update, so that users could know what are they going to get after update. If such information is already published on nokia website, kindly make it easily available.

Re: Whats new in v5.50 for nokia 6300?

I dont know this too, did you get some new settings like adjusting default screen brightness to lets say 50% to save on battery life etc?

My 5.0 version is running smoothly... dont want to break it unless there is such a feature...

Better compatibilty with CK-7W (i.e. no echo and better outgoing audio) would be nice!

Re: Whats new in v5.50 for nokia 6300?

apart from resetting some of my settings, which i was aware of , the only problem i have is the voice command function isn't working any more,
when i hold the 'right-soft key' or 'volume down key' it instantly says 'Voice system error'

does this happen to anyone else with v5.5?

Re: Whats new in v5.50 for nokia 6300?

In software terminology, there are 4 version notations example 4.3.2.1

4 All together NEW Rewrite
3 Major
2 Minor
1 Bug Fix

Some thing like 5.5 means there has been in this way means there is a major update, but with no "what's new" or Relese notes any where on Nokia Site, it's so naive of Nokia to put so called "live" Software update.. but not letting users know what's "New" in.. I have a feeling that it's just a new Version Number... Nothing has changed at all...

There are so many things missing in the Software....

Now I know why the price of 6300 is falling down so fast.... it is now less than half of what it was when it was launched just under a year ago.... Largest fall of price (next to Apple iPhone of course)....

The Features that I would like to see on Nokia 6300 are

1) Brightness contrast adjustment
2) Numerous Bug Fixes

3) (hardware related) use of more powerful battery such as 1020 mAH BL 5C Battery as against 860 mAH BL 4C ... tat would be like 20% improvement in battery life... just by looking in to capacity.. (i know some people have used BL5C by trimming the front end... but still why cant Nokia update the structure of the battery 'holder' to be able to accommodate BL5C.. I know there is SPACE available to accommodate BL 5C in Nokia 6300

There is Nokia 6301 announced with wiFi and Series 40 5th Edition... but i wonder.. if the battery life will be 4 hours TOTAL instead of current 8 HOURS TOTAL for 6300!!!...

Sorry for the rumbling... i had to get it off my chest...

Ideal phone as of now for me is E51.... hope the battery life is good and it has lesser bugs than Nokia 6300 ... I have now more trust in Symbian Series 60 as compared to Series 40 Phone....

Re: Whats new in v5.50 for nokia 6300?

[ Edited ]
So far I haven't experienced any bugs with v 5.5, except the first time the N Care Center loaded it, the # key stopped working to toggle between silent and general profiles. They reinstalled 5.5 and the # key works properly now.

The changes I've noticed so far include but are not limited to:

1. The idle screen display time out has been changed so that it goes from the brightest setting to a dimmer setting after approx 20 seconds. I think it was bright for longer than that in v. 5.0.

2. The unlock keypad function now requires only 2 key presses instead of the three it required before.

3. The incoming, outgoing and missed call icons in the call log have been made bigger and more colorful so they are easier to see and comprehend.

4. The bluetooth menu (where you go to turn on bluetooth) has been improved.

I'm sure there are other changes but these are the ones I've noticed so far.

Also, pressing on the volume down key for the voice function doesn't produce any errors on my phone.

I don't spend hours talking on the phone per day, but the battery life seems acceptable to me. I don't mind charging my phone every night while I sleep. Also, it is very easy to carry a spare battery if necessary. They are quite small.

I don't see how Nokia can be expected to modify the phone after it has been released to accept a larger battery. It would be nice, however, if they would make a more powerful battery available for the phone, but I really have no complaints about the battery life on mine.

In fact, I don't understand why there is such a bad rep for the 6300 on this Nokia forum. (People seem to like it quite a bit over on Howard Forums.) Granted I just got mine recently so haven't had to put up with any of the buggy firmware earlier than 5.0, but I haven't experienced any serious bugs or problems and think the phone is an outstanding value for the US$212 I paid for a brand new unbranded one a couple of weeks ago. Although it is not perfect, I think it is one of the nicest phones Nokia has come out with in a long time, especially considering the price they are going for now.

Re: this is new:

I too have just updated my Nokia 6300 from Version 5 to 5.5 hoping that it would fix the bluetooth problems I and the other chaps at work have had from day 1 with these phones....and nope its still the same.

People can not hear me as I'm alway breaking up....we have now tryed a Nokia HS36W, a Jabra BT125 and a Jabra BT250v.

The company I brought the phone from blame the head sets....what all 3!!! Never had a problem on my last 2 phones with the HS36w.

What else can it be, we did 2 things, change from Vodafone to orange which included new hand sets....6300. now it carn't be the service provider...can it??

So it must be the hand set.
Sort it out nokia....its a joke.

dz7066,

The only change that has occurred from 5.0 to 5.5 is the change of icons... nothing else has changed.

Re: this is new:

when I try to install nokia updater, it gives the fatal error that I do not have sufficient RAM (requires 256 min, I have 192). So if I have a slower comp, deos that mean I can't update my phone? What is this, the Vista of updaters? It has stunning visuals that will improve my experience of updating?

Any help?

It would be preferable to have a Windows XP / Vista with atleast 512 MB of ram....

now a days ram costs very less, you can even upgrade your RAM....

Re: this is new:

user6300. I have nothing personal with you, dude, I was just wondering. I can run the updater on my laptop, that has more than enough memory, so it's ok. However, the reqs for the updater are just mindblowing to me. Will you say that it needs more resources than Azureus or Limewire, that use all the bandwidth they can get, and run just fine? To me it seems that it's just something that Nokia did not have to do. Unnecessary. Just a mini-rant...

User 6300, I have seen the changelog for v.5.5. I'm not allowed to post it here or link to it, or spell out the changes, but I can tell you that a heck of a lot more than only the Call Log icons were changed.
