3.2Megapixel camera .... it's indeed an hardware feature, if the guy doesn't understand that i'll put it this way:
There is a rectangle with a measurement of 1/6" inch diagonal with a 4:3 ratio, behind the camera lens, that little rectangle has something engraved on it, photo sites and logic circuits for them, photo sites are the oposite of liquid crystals on your screen - instead of giving light receive it (and to distinguish RBG they have color filters over them) - they are engraved in a silicium crystal, photo sites are the pixels on your camera resolution, you cannot engrave more of them using software...
The only thing they can change in firmware it's how exposure is done (and what can the user control in it) and how image is treated and compressed as a JPEG...
Answering your question:
I guess because Nokia 5800 is no longer maintained....
The only device, that I recall, that kept being maintained for a long time after getting unlisted was N95, but it had a bunch of diferent versions ... 5800 Navigator edition kinda gave me some hopes that they would put it right, but after C6-00 they obviously didn't (it's basically 5800 with a physical qwerty keyboard).
We were being asking for bug correction, more fluid interface, landscape homescreen and some sort of widgetery on it (I don't even ask for a full fledge widgets screen, but some customization options aside of removing stuff from it, with landscape support)...
Sadly, more bugs have been introduced, thankfully some were corrected, interface got a little better overtime, homescreen has 2 major versions - N97, C6-00 vs 5230, 5530, 5800 - for identical hardware.
Major problem with Symbian is that it is too old.... too bloated... With current rumors of a parnership between Nokia and Microsoft, it's just a matter of time until Nokia become hardware manufacturer to Microsoft WM7 ...
Looking how HP / Palm got together working on the new WebOS devices and SDK/IDE for them, I kinda feel like Nokia is moving too slow and will get into big trouble... :/
It would be nice if they just released all the source code of S60^1, ^2 and ^3, their device specific variants and compiler toolchain and libraries for them... Not going to happen ;]

Well... 1,3MP cameras are often called 1MP cameras, it's hard to tell, but sometimes sensors photosites that are not used or just used to compensate distortion...throwing an image with less MPs than the sensor has... (An example: Fujifilm Finepix HS10)
Usually phones take photos at 5:4, 3:2 or 4:3 ratios, 3:2 being the most common ratio on photography, similar common resolutions could be considered:
1MP = 1200x800 (3:2)
1MP = 1280x800 (16:9 - common on computer screens)
1,2MP = 1280x960 (4:3 - very common in web-cameras)
1,3MP = 1280x1024 (5:4)
1,3MP = 1440x900 (16:9 - common on computer screens, but not on camera sensors)
The only way i see for it to increase to 1,3MP would be that the phone had a 1,3MP sensor, but because 5:4 it's almost square and not 'normal' looking, they cropped the data from the sensor, giving a more pleasing looking photo, the firmware would just need to avoid that cropping mechanism to show a 1,3MP instead of 1MP...
My camera (a real camera, not the mobile phone one) has a multi ratio sensor, meaning that it has it has extra pixels that ensure that no matter what of the available ratios I choose, I'll get 12MPs...
Other thing could be that they just initially rounded the value down, and for marketing reasons put the decimals back later (I wouldn't be surprised)
5800 has 3.2MP ... nothing will change that... you could rescale the image in software, but the extra detail wouldn't be there....

See,the point is dat if nokia provides widget homescreen like c6 then who will buy C6 and similarly if nokia provides n8 features on 5800 (only some features can be ported as the whole OS is very heavy for 5800 to handle) which comparatively cheap than n8 then who will buy N8.This was one of the major problem why nokia was not releasing widget homescreen and n8 like features and also this problem is discussed earlier this discussion.BUT WHAT IS THE PROBLEM NOW!the sale of 5800 has already stopped ! then why is nokia hesitating to release a better firmware and also it will not affect the sale of their future models!
Why is NOkia showing this reckless attitude of not providing any better fw?they simply mean money and nothing else!!!!!!!!!!!

Thought I'd let you know I've received a response to my message from 6th December (see earlier). The text is below, clearly boilerplate and disappointing. I've pointed out that I'm disappointed they are not prepared to recognise that their product has significant bugs that didn't exist in previous versions, and said it's too late as I now have an Android phone!

I think that the Nokia device with the longest service (firmware/software) history it's N95... but I could be wrong...
5800 with the v52.0.0.7 got better, but still has some 'liver' crysis, forget calls log, xpressMusic button stops showing pop-up menu (even if vibration feedback it's acting), randomly freezes in Radio and Music apps, crashes and gets some screen color stripes (this is both an hardware and software issue), has some RAM management issues (but it's a LOT better than what it was) and has some interface hiccupps...
On the 'good' side N97 has even worse issues... Nokia will go WP7, Symbian it's dead, Maemo goes zombie (it was never alive to start), RIP Nokia....
At least Palm did something well when got brough by HP, those new Palm OS powered devices look good .... for me... well... my old 'dumb' phones looks better than any modern smartphone... Shame I don't have my old SL45i...
