My Nokia E61i has a firmware of 1.0633.22.05, marked as 15-02-07, RM-227.
noticed the product's web-page mentions an update with good features and improvements.
check it out here:
http://www.nokia.co.in/get-support-and-software/do
it mentions i may manage an update using wifi directly on my mobile, but no option is actuallly available when i visit the above url over my mobile. the only option available is a download to a pc of an *.exe file.
here's the deaI: do not use MSWindows. Do not have access to any pc running windows, and don't wish to use a publicly-shared pc at a cybercafe. i only use linux ubuntu, and as a fallback, the Mac OS.
since nokia does not have update software that works on either mac or linux, i'd suppose atleast a platform-agnostic approach direct from mobile via wifi or gprs-over-edge to nokia's support page would work.
please nokia, do not force end-users to become enslaved to specific PC platforms. the worldwide base of mobilephones is signficantly higher than that of PCs, so you need to look at a bigger picture.
please share with me, how may i update my nokia without msWindows, and without visiting a nokia support centre. i've got wifi, gprs-over-edge, ubuntu linux, mac os, and am reasonably tech-savvy.
thanks in advance.

uh, on your phone, connect to wifi, type in *#0000#. You will see a splash page stating your current firmware. Go to options>check for updates. Once a new update is found, it will ask you to download. Once it has downloaded, it will ask you if you want to install new update.

hi chanchan, thanks for your prompt response.
have already tried that method, it does not work.
here's what happens:
if i type *#0000# all i get is the firmware version displayed, details mentioned in my first-post, and a single button that says 'OK'.
there is no option.
so, i've even tried the app pre-installed in my mobile, called 'Dev. mgr.' when i click on options>start configuration, i get the message 'operation cancelled by server'. the 'edit profile' in options shows me that i have entered the correct details as mentioned on the support page of the E61i. fyi, am using Airtel in delhi, and have both gprs-over-edge and wi-fi.
what next?
regards
niyam

Hmm, maybe because I'm using a phone with different OS version. There should be somewhere under your Tools Menu referring to software. Something like device updates? try to look for it.

The E61i cannot be updated via the method suggested by chanchan05. No OTA updated were ever released for that model.
OTA updates did not become a common occurrence until the S60v3FP2 smartphones appeared.
The E61i can only be updated using a windows based PC or by the specialist equipment that some phone stores and nokia care points have.
No other methods are possible.

Ah I see. thanks for clearing that up. The e61i was a phone released when I still was considered too young by my parents to use smartphones. LOL.
