Unable to update to a newer firmware on Nokia N97, help me?

My phone is unable to update to a newer firmware and I don't know why this is so.
I've tried to update it to the firmware v21 when it came out but it didn't go, so I thought maybe it's too early for my phone to be able to update it to the new firmware. So I waited a month or two and tried again but it's unable to update, it says that the there's no new firmware for my phone. But that has been 6 months now and now that there's a newer one, firmware v22 I've check if I can update to that but it still say that there's no new firmware update.

So what can I do to fix this problem? I've already did the whole "product code" , the "Software update" on pc, the "SF update on device", the "*#0000#" things to see if there's new update but nothing. None of these things would even update my phone at all!
What else can I do to update my phone?

One way could be to go  to your provider and complain about some shortcomings of the N97 of which it is know that there are (nearly) eliminated with the newest firmware.

Another way is to google a bit about how to install firmware on your phone when it seems not possible. (As I am not sure to tell you here how to do this, I wan't.)

you might have a sim/operator locked phone. if yes, ask your provider about the release of the firmware.

I didn't buy my phone here where I'm living at, I bought it in Hong Kong but it's an unlocked phone.

I didn't buy my phone from my provider, I bought it in Hong Kong when I was traveling. But do you think it will still matter if I go to my provider and tell them about the firmware?

And how can you do that, where can you tell me that's not here?

Re: Unable to update to a newer firmware on Nokia N97, help me?

I'm having the same problem as well. My parents bought me a HK spec N97 as a gift. But even though the Nokia Hong Kong website says that firmware V22 is available there, I can't seem to download it. The phone is an unbranded unlocked handset as well from what I can tell. Anyone manage to fix this problem yet or has the V22 firmware not been fully rolled out to all N97's yet?

Re: Unable to update to a newer firmware on Nokia N97, help me?

Reasons why a phone cannot update:

1. It is a country variant - country variants often get the updates later, or have updates skipped altogether. A Turkish country variant product code for example, skipped v40 and updated from v31 straight to v50.

2. It is network branded - phones acquired from network providers or these providers' stores SIM free are branded, and will not get updates until the networks approve and modify the updates to their liking.

3. Special editions - These special editions are chartered editions and may never get updates unless taken to a Nokia Care center.

The phone doesnt have to be branded to get late updates.

Well, as far as I can tell, it isn't network branded and it isn't a special edition. I'm guessing it's the first reason. Ironically, I checked the Nokia HK update checker with the phone's product code and it said the latest firmware available is older than what I have (v20 as opposed to v21 on the phone). Thanks for the advice anyway. I just hope eventually Nokia see some sense and roll out some sort of update.

Buddy you are not missing all that much anyway. V22 is not a significant improvement over V20 or V21. Wait untill V30. Believe me you are not missing almost anything.

I understand you; I used to want updates a.s.a.p, but now I get over it. You will eventually get the latest updates, especially, if you have an unbranded phone. Just wait..

However if you CAN'T hold your horses, then just go to the nearest Nokia Center and they will update it for you free of charge. It takes like half an hour.

Re: Unable to update to a newer firmware on Nokia N97, help me?

That might be a bit difficult considering that it's a Hong Kong spec phone so I suspect the Nokia Service Centres here in the United Kingdom will not touch it. The lack of a firmware update is annoying but so far I've not had half the problems with my N97 the rest of the internet mentions, so I'm quite happy. GPS works. It receives and makes calls. That's really all I ask from my phone. I'm looking forward to the v30 update though. What is rumoured to be in it anyway?

@Dchh - oh the UK nokia care will touch it alright (at least the ones in my country are willing to work on phones from other countries), but for a fee.
