Nokia Software Updater is bad software

I downloaded the new version of Nokia software updater to use with my Laptop (running Vista, 2.1 dual processor, 3gb Ram) and it slowed down my PC and caused lots of problems with high processor demands even though no processes were showing in Task Manager.
I had to use system restore to get rid of all the changes as it still left **bleep** in the system after I uninstalled it.
Also, after trying to use it I find that you can only use it with a phone connected by cable and not Bluetooth.
Please would you test your software before inflicting it on the unsuspecting public. This was a nightmare to purge from the system.

Re: Nokia Software Updater is bad software

Hm, I´ve been using Nokia Software Updater for quite some time now and my PC is much more slower than yours, but I´ve never had it slow down my PC or decrease its performance. :smileyhappy:

But maybe other users have that same problem?

It also would be interesting to hear the experiences of other Windows Vista users.

And it is pretty obvious why your phones firmware cannot be updated via bluetooth... :smileyvery-happy:

Re: Nokia Software Updater is bad software

Not quite a Vista user... BUT:
I will reinstall my XP SP3 tomorrow, because the SoftwareUpdater-Update caused numerous bluescreens on my machine (Intel q6600 on Asus P5W DH Del, 4x1GB OCZ RAM)
The recent versions of PC suite haven't been working for me neither, so i had to use v6.84 (if i'm not mistakin)

Now i have to look for an old version of the cable driver again, 7.0.2 doesn't work :smileysad:

What's really annoying, is the fact, that the software updater said, it won't work, until i update to the most recent version... Which doesn't work! Anybody ever heard the words: NEVER TOUCH A RUNNING SYSTEM??? Why can't i make the decision to update or not? And why isn't there an archive on the net, where i can get older versions?

I'm curious, if the recent version is going to work on my new installation in a few days... Coincidentally, my new graphics card arrived today, so i guess reinstallation isn't the worst idea after all - the OS was 3 years old: RIP

Re: Nokia Software Updater is bad software

i've been using NSU on both windows xp and vista, can't say i've witnessed what you're complaining of. although i do prefer xp to vista when updating.
earlier versions of the NSU have been reported to cause crashes of vista systems due to different reasons :
/discussions/board/message?board.id=pcsuite&thread.id=17995&view=by_date_ascending&page=2

but this has been largely solved in the latest version, so , please try to update your system using "windows update" and then re-install the latest NSU version. i hope that will solve the problems .

Re: Nokia Software Updater is bad software

I've got a Vista machine, and I must say that NSU has been behaving badly for me too. I've got it to recognise my new 6500 slide, and it downloads the update, begins to install it, and after the progress bar has moved about half a centimetre, the phone disconnects, and it tells me to take the battery out, put it back in, turn the phone on and continue. I do all this, and then about 2 mins later, it does it again. I'm using a nokia ca-101 cable, but it seems to disconnect every 2 mins using NSU. On normal PC suite, updating contacts etc, the cable works fine. It seems there are some basic problems with NSU, namely it won't update your phone...

Re: Nokia Software Updater is bad software

one question thought - on that link u posted, it says to hit back on NSU, and try again, but the latest version of NSU only has cancel and retry - I'm assuming retry is the right one to press, is that right, or should i cancel and start again?

Re: Nokia Software Updater is bad software

hmm, i'm getting a different message now, saying that the connection to the phone is lost and i should reconnect the usb cable, rather than the earlier one of taking the battery out and turning the phone back on... I've been clicking the retry button on it every few minutes for the last 40 minutes, and i'm very happy to sit here clicking retry all night, but it would be good to know if this is still helping, or if i'm just wasting my time. Does it matter that I'm getting a different message?

well it's getting risky isn't it :smileyhappy:. you have two choices now.
1- remove the usb cable from the computer and reconnect it again.
in this case if the phone turned completely off during this period, connect it again and press on to start it "while connected".
2- press back , and then next again "as the appropriate driver should have been installed by now.

LET ME REMIND YOU THAT WHAT WE ARE DOING NOW IS JUST A USER TO USER ADVICE. IF YOU THINK YOU CAN'T DO THIS, OR TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO YOUR PHONE I ADVICE YOU TO LEAVE THIS FOR THE NOKIA CARE POINT TO DO.
