OK, after all the response that said it worked on XP, I retried and did get it to work successfully. So it does look as though its a Vista problem.

XP Pro worked perfectly for me too.

The NSU team are aware of the issue with vista on certain systems. Hopefully a new version will be released soon for those without access to an XP machine.

Man, I'm having the same problem here!!!
The only solution I have in my mind is : 'go to a Lanhouse (or Internet Coffe), and Update there :/
becouse I have Windows Vista too.. and it's freaking me out

It was okay before the latest NSU problem, I use Vista SP1 with the latest patches.

I had same problem, for two days i was trying to update my phone. The problems is NSU has bug. I could not wait till Nokia team will fix it, so i kept trying.
When Service Layer Host Stopped Responding window displayed, its usually happens on 15 min on update, just close NSU with Task manager, BUT DONT DISCONNECT PHONE. After closing NSU, start NSU again while phone connected to PC.
NSU will start updating from same point where it stopped.
It worked for me.
Please note you doing it on your owe risk.
Another solution just wait till new version of NSU will be available.

confirmed working by me. thanks man! it may take a while.

but like he said; let it give the error. click close program. exit the updater via task manager. restart updater. basically keep clicking ok. mine started talking about restore. just click thru and it will work!

I have (had!) a Nokia N82 and in my enthusiasm tried to upgrade to version 20 without checking about the "Nokia service layer host process" problem on Vista. I followed the work around of killing and re-starting NSU. For a brief moment of happiness, things worked and after re-start NSU upgraded the firmware and I saw "Phone upgraded successfully" message". But my phone never booted but only flashed while I tried to switch it on after the so-called successful update. End result -> brick. I tried everything mentioned on web-forums but to no avail. Took it to Nokia service center the next day and after around a month I get a response from them that they will swap my phone with a "working" model.So what I thought was an innocuous problem completely screwed up my phone. I am a regular user of NSU and have successfully used it previously but after what I have encountered with my dear N82, I 'll always be wary. My advice : Don't use Vista SP1 to upgrade your phone (not sure if NSU has been fixed by Nokia as yet). Do it on XP or else enjoy using ur N82 without flash lite 3 and geo tagging instead of drooling for it and ending up with a dead phone!
