Re: Nokia Service Layer Host Process Has Stopped Working

I have (had!) a Nokia N82 and in my enthusiasm tried to upgrade to version 20 without checking about the "Nokia service layer host process" problem on Vista. I followed the work around of killing and re-starting NSU. For a brief moment of happiness, things worked and after re-start NSU upgraded the firmware and I saw "Phone upgraded successfully" message". But my phone never booted but only flashed while I tried to switch it on after the so-called successful update. End result -> brick. I tried everything mentioned on web-forums but to no avail. Took it to Nokia service center the next day and after around a month I get a response from them that they will swap my phone with a "working" model. So what I thought was an innocuous problem completely screwed up my phone. I am a regular user of NSU and have successfully used it previously but after what I have encountered with my dear N82, I 'll always be wary. My advice : Don't use Vista SP1 to upgrade your phone (not sure if NSU has been fixed by Nokia as yet). Do it on XP or else enjoy using ur N82 without flash lite 3 and geo tagging instead of drooling for it and ending up with a dead phone!

Re: Nokia Service Layer Host Process Has Stopped Working

Thank you so much! I've been trying to update my n95 8gb for ages on vista home premium. That method worked first time for me, and now I can enjoy the auto-rotate function with v20.0.016.
Thank goodness i found this thread, because I wasn't getting any help from nokia support. I read on another site that nokia closed its support service for windows vista and NSU related issues on 8 May. I agree that they should announce this problem and ignoring it deffinately isn't going to solve the problem.
Thanks again!

Yes, that is what I would suggest. If your phone doesn't work anyway now, you don't have anything to lose, do you? The only way I could get my phone back up running again, agter having removed the cable, was to take out and put back the battery. Just remember not to touch the phone or cable while using the "force upgrade" method. Be sure your battery is fully charged before you do it, and make a backup first. I have not tried this with the Vista SP1 version, and I do not know which you are running? But it worked on the Vista Home Premium version, without service pack.
Good luck.

Re: Nokia Service Layer Host Process Has Stopped Working

Yet another satisfied upgrader here!

6500c, had PCS and NSU running just fine, then PCS told me there was an update for my phone, so I backed it up and launched NSU.

NSU told me it had to update itself before it would run, so I did that, then it told me it wasn't compatible with Vista. Thanks a bunch Nokia...

So, being enterprising (and stupid, obviously), I set NSU to run in XP Compatability mode, and it launched just fine.

Started the update and got the dreaded "Nokia Service Layer Host Process" death message. Oops!

Thanks to this thread though, I now have a 6500c running v4.84 firmware instead of a very small brick.

Let's just hope that v4.84 fixes my 6500c so that when it loses a 3G signal it doesn't just sit there stupidly waiting for a 3G network again, instead of swappiung back to GSM... :-/

Re: Nokia Service Layer Host Process Has Stopped Working

Ha ha, my bad! I spoke too soon.

Just as I hit submit, my 6500c 'rebooted' itself (black then white screen). It's come back up to the idle screen by itself (no PIN entry or anything), but that's not a good sign is it? ;-)

Re: Nokia Service Layer Host Process Has Stopped Working

You people are lucky you don't have face this problem every now and then, you get this message while updating your firmware. I am getting this msg every time I wish to access my ph through PC suite.

I am really surprised what these Nokia people are doing, they should address this problem and try to solve this as early as possible. I tried to uninstall 7.0.7.0 and install the older version but now facing the same problem with the older version as well. Previously older version was not giving this msg. But now I can't access my mob through pc suite.

Re: Nokia Service Layer Host Process Has Stopped Working

Having this same issue on Vista Ultimate 32 bit machine.

Have uninstalled and reinstalled both PC suite (latest version) and NSU and simply get Nokia Service Host layer errors.

Have tried countless tips from here and via google, and it doesnt work.

Are Nokia still investigating this, because I refuse to mess with my system simply to attempt to get it working.

Re: Nokia Service Layer Host Process Has Stopped Working

Forget all the other cr*p... The NSU us badly written, but here's my solution:

1. Disable ICS (Control Panel > Admin Services > Services > Internet Connection Sharing = Disable)

2. Run NSU as Administrator...

Worked for me on Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit.

Re: Nokia Service Layer Host Process Has Stopped Working

I tried a few of the earlier suggestions and none worked. Ironic that the last post solved it. Thanks very much! I strongly suggest anyone else with this problem tries it. I couldn't even get the updater to start until I followed this advice.

Re: Nokia Service Layer Host Process Has Stopped Working

Hi Folks,

I am running:
Windows Vista Business SP1
PC Suite 7.1.18.0
NSU 1.4.70

What I did was, open NSU folder and change the software properties to run it with XP SP2 compatibility. Done!

Unfortunatly my E65 was already up to date... :smileywink:

Good luck!

This trick works for me, I wish I read this earlier, it could have saved me a lot of time wasted while trying all other things including uninstalling all of MS updates from November.

Re: Nokia Service Layer Host Process Has Stopped Working

frnds,

"Nokia Service Layer Host Process Has Stopped Working"

I too faced this problem with NSU with my vista machine.

I am not sure whether u 'll solve by doing this but in my case ....
here it is

If u are using an ad hoc connection for sharing your internet connection with other machines or cell( ICS ) just disable it ( by unchecking the check box) thn try NSU.

hope it helps.

Re: Nokia Service Layer Host Process Has Stopped Working

Hey maltese007, this was by far the simplest and easiest answer;

For those that need to know, I combined Vista Home Premium with my N95 8GB with NSU v1.4.85en (and I only got NSU tonight!!)

Remember to turn your ICS back on when you've finished
