So I just received my Nokia 5800 and it is an OK phone. I want to update the firmware so all the minor annoyances I have with it go away. My problem is when I try to do a computer based or over the air software update I am told that my software is up to date or no new update is available. I know that the firmware has been updated since v21.1.025 so why can I not update my phone. I bought the phone unlocked. PS I am in US my product code is 0577454. The nokia website also tells me that I have the latest firmware which I am quite sure I don't.

If it says your device is up to date, then simply put, it's up to date. No firmware update has been released for your varient mate.

But everywhere I have looked online: wikipedia, symbian guru and Nokia's own website ( I attached link on previous post) says that new firmware has been released

Is there some confusion over wording?  My 5800 SOFTWARE version is 21.0.025.428.01 (as displayed on settings - phone - device updates".  I have read that there is a FIRMWARE update called 31.0.008.  If firmware is different to software; where can I find what my phone's Firmware version is?  I did try (using the phones own update system - via wifi) to get any available update (the phone does not specify wether it is looking for either software or firmware updates.  Anyway it took over 2 hours to do apparently nothing - it just continued to read "Receiving data from Nokia.  So I cancelled that and instead installed the Nokia PC suite on my laptop.  I then followed all the onscreen instructions on connection the phone to the computer and it  apparently was updating the phone.  Then in 10 minutes the phone said "Server not responding".  I dissconected the phone from the laptop and rechecked its software version.  There was no change.

Simple answer is that the firmware is rolled out nation by nation phone provider by phone provider .

Example UK no firmware yet . Then if its a branded phone you have to wait until the phone service provider decides to update .

If your firmware version is 21.1.025 then you have a phone for the Chinese market (without 3G and without WiFi). V31 is only available for the global version of the 5800 so far (ie. neither the PRC version nor the NAM version).

I bought the phone through Dell, an authorized US retailer. I can use the 3.5G network here in the US and I bought the phone unlocked so I am pretty sure that its not a chinese version and that my carrier is not preventing me from an update. ..So basically Nokia has not released any firmware update since the phones release here in the US? This makes me quite unhappy. I might return the phone and get a sony ericsson.

If you have 3G working then you have the NAM variant and your firmware version is 21.2.025 not 21.1.025.

Even the NAM variant always lags behind the global version because of the different hardware (different frequency bands for 3G).

I'm fairly confident that 21.2.025 is the latest version for your phone.

There have been at least 2 updates since the phone was released in the USA. The release schedule was V10, V11, V20 then V21.

I also bought my 5800 ExpressMusic on Dell.  It has software v.21.2.025.  It is unlocked and I can use Wifi.

Why hasn't Nokia released an update for this phone yet - if one is already available.

This phone has these problems:

1. web browser crashes frequently.

2. screen lock-up (won't accept stylus or finger input)

3. message received indicator light goes on even after reading a text message

These are serious bugs!!

I also have the problem 3 with the firmware 21.0.025 and a lot of more problems (for example screen was totaly unreadable sometimes when i turn on when I unlock the phone).

This firmware it's very BAD. When Nokia let me update to the new firmware 31.0.008? (Product code: 0575570) RM-356

I apologize for the typographical error I also have 21.2.025. I am quite annoyed at Nokia though, how come some of Nokia 5800 users are randomly allowed to upgrade their firmware based on their product code while other are not. I can't fathom any logical reason for why Nokia is making  half its customer suffer (although I don't know how much better the newer firmware are). This is completely irresponsible behavior for the world's largest smartphone maker and if this poor track record of customer satisfaction continues, Nokia won't be the market leader for long.

Double check the most up to date version on the 'can i update' section of the support site. Product code 0575581 just went up from v21 to v30. It appears that things are moving again. This changed just today as it was still v21 this morning.

Finland, purchased phone yesterday, latest update: 21.0.025. Insteresting. Definitely not a north american or chinese version.

A new software updater was released this week in UK

Before the software updater it showed no updates with the updater both  these models updated in the UK (sim Free)

sw updater is V 1 8 10 en which is the english version

So keep a look out for the new software updater and then I am sure you will get V30

My N97's code (0585162 updated to V12 on 16 10 09 as did the X5800's ( Product code 0575581) updated to V30 0 011 ( both support ALS line 2)

so have you got the latest software updater and neither of these showed an update ota

IF you use your EYEs and KEYBOARD a quick look through this board will expalin WHY the release dates are different

Different countries have different wireless requirements and software releases in these countries has to be approved by the NETWORKS and Telecoms agencies

for example and I know every one does it Here in the UK is is ilegal to use a NON Orange aproved phone on Orange and you ARE breaking the TERMS AND CONDITIONS I would even guess the other operators have similar terms in their contracts too

Sou you need to get on to your networks and your governmentsto see if they are aproving the updates as and when they are released some countries are more relaxed about what is released

The other option is to buy your phone from Nokia in the country you think is getting preference with the web it is easy to buy now

there is an anomly though and that is roaming I travel world wide and have never had a problem taking my phones around the world and apart from Customs restricions I have also had no trouble buying Duty Free sim free phones Manchester airport in UK used to sell sim free phones in Term 1 but in the last few years since the High Street shops moved that has stopped now

so it is NOT just Nokia holding up the updates and if you look at some of the lesser names THEY NEVER update and what you buy is what you get becuase they dont go through all the extra type approval it is too costly

You are very convincing, except for the fact that I know of several people with v.30 firmware on the same network as I. GSM and 3g networks, at least here in Finland are standardised. I can literally grab a phone from sonera, and use it on any of its major competitor networks, and it will work fine (seen it done with my own eyes). Should be noted that I am in fact using one of the competitor's networks (saunalahti) and my phone is bought unbranded, straight from the shop.

Something stinks very, very hard here, and for once, it doesn't seem that stench is coming from telcos.

Just bought 5800 this week and cannot update the firmware from v21... The phone is bought from Finland and it is unlocked and unbranded. Still for some reason the update is not available although I know several people who have updated their 5800s to v31.

Would like to know why customers are treated unequally...

my 5800 version is 21.0.025, type :RM-356, which region is that and are there any updates for it yet? i've check through software updater and through the on board phone updater and nothing?

RM-356 is only the hardware model. It gives no information about the regional variant. For that we need the product code, which is printed on the product identification label under the battery. It's a 7-digit code beginning with "05".
