N97 connection problem

Hi, I got a new N97 on Orange 2 days back. I really like the phone but am having problems with it switching between WIFI and Orange Internet. I have tried various things from other threads but all to no avail. I have added my WIFI and set it to Internet Priority 1 in Destinations with my Orange Internet as P3, I have set Real Player, TV & Video and WEB to use Internet as instructed on another thread but still it will not automatically connect to my WIFI even though its shown as 'Avail'. To get connected to WIFI I have to reboot the phone to pick up the new connection, same when I go out, it needs a reboot to pick up Orange. Can anybody offer further advice or tips? Also I have read alot about V11 firmware, I have checked and it is not available for my  phone yet but will this fix this connection problem? If so I am prepared to wait for it as utherwise I am really impressed with the phone, however i can't live with having to reboot the phone everytime I leave the house to pick up a connection and am considering returning the phone. Thanks in advance...

Re: N97 connection problem

hi, I'm having the same problem here, however I am on the 3 network.

it's infuriating as on my old N95 I could simply select the choice of wi-fi or 3's internet with each connection.  the n97 has a mind of its own, connecting to either and forcing me to then switch one or the other off. if Im outside it wont connect to 3's service and inside it wont connect to wi-fi. this is a problem when trying to use any of the installed features such as iplayer which is data heavy and so I dont want to use up my allowance when I could use my wi-fi.

surely this is easily fixed by using the same technique as used on my n95? whether this will be fixed on the firmware update remains to be seen... much like the update...how long do we have to wait for that...pull your fingers out for crying out loud.

the longer this goes on the more and more likely the n97 iphone killer is becoming the n97 nokia killer.

Re: N97 connection problem

So...Did anyone find a solution for that? I think there are some programms like EasyWefin or something else in nokia or ovi store which are free and they seem to help you prioritize the connections so that each time a program wants to connect to the net it asks you for access point. I tried one of these but again its kinda complicated. Also sometimes i get disconected after 2-3 secs using my office wifi connection. Anyone else gets that? Is the wifi adapter powerful enough in Nokia N97? Thanks.

Re: N97 connection problem

It should be under destinations inside settings.

You can change the priority of the access points, and make it so it can't connect automatically to three/orange without your permission.

If you're not able to connect or select your access point using the web browser, you need set the default connection to ask each time within the settings of the web application.

If you get the selection screen saying 'internet' 'wap' and you get to choose, you can hit the left selection key and manually select what access point you want, regardless to the priority you have it set.

I had a n96 with the same issues you have raised, all i needed to do is set 'three video mobile intneret' to the lowest priority in the internet group and set it not to connect automatically so i have full control on when it conencts and how.

By the way, you can see if your connected to the internet by looking just below the siginal indicator, if there are SOLID arrows below the word '3g' then your connected to the network internet (for example three or orange), to quicky disconnect hold down the hangup for a few seconds on the standby screen.

Hope it helps.

Re: N97 connection problem

Same problem here. I am on Vodafone.

Priority 1 connection is WIFI & Priority 2 is Internet. The only problem is when you go into your wifi area (eg priority 1) the phone does not automaticlaly switch to that connection. you have to close the other connection manually.

I have logged this with vodafone who say it will be fixed with the N97 update next week which can be done straight from the N97 phone.....

PLEASE SORT IT NOKIA

Re: N97 connection problem

It may be intended to work like this. If an application has opened a connection, the connection will remain active even if a higher priority access point becomes available. Imagine if the application is actively transferring data, if the phone disconnects the data connection and re-establishes a new one with the higher priority access point, it might upset the application.

While a working data connection is up, new applications that start up will also continue using this connection and not start a new one with the higher priority access point. This could have been a preferred behaviour and an accepted compromise (to not breaking the existing data connection used by already active applications), but perhaps there are some constraints with the technology that would present more problems to make it worthwhile to implement.

Re: N97 connection problem

Here is the solution. Set your WiFi access point perfectly. Now go to Web and Option -> Settings. In settings select General, click on Access point and select your WiFi Access point. Now exit from web and restart your mobile. This will solve your problem.
