I have a European version unbranded N96 that has version 12.043 of the firmware installed. I have tried OTA installation but the phone does not detect the new firwmware. I tried directly from the phone the  using OVI and also using PC Suite but still cannot update. When i updated to version 12.043 last year just after I bought the phone everything worked fine with the update. But the phone never detected version 20 either and now I have been trying for version 30.033 with no luck.

I have been through loads of blogs and forums and it seems that plenty of people have installed the firmware using OTA so I cannot understand why I cannot access it.

Is there anywhere I can download the firmware directly ?

have you tried NSU or Nokia software updater, if not download it from nokia web site and try.

I have tried with NSU. i have also tried looking for the latest firmware on the Nokia site using the code inside the phone as recommended in the help section of the NSU . This is the message I get

12.043 is the version I have installed. But most people seem to have got the newer versions 20 and 30 using the updater so the firmware should be available somewhere.

there are various types of N96 and they are all diffrent maybe your region doesn't have yet an updated software for your N96

i have waited 2 months until i got my N78 updated software..so be cool,it will be out in some how

You could be right. But it is strange that two new firmwares get released after 12.034 and none of them is made available for my version of the N96. Maybe they were beta versions .....

Anyway, nothing surprises me any more with this phone. I will never spend this much money on a Nokia again.

The problem is that your Your Nokia N96,With product code 0573063  is not a European unbraned version it is a 0573063 - unlocked 3 UK .The one you need is 0543713: EURO 1.European Unbranded ...... It is possible to get the version you want! but not from this site. Hope This helps

That explains it then. When I bought it I did not know there was any difference. The phone was NIB and came without any carrier marks whatsoever. I assumed it came straight from the factory. Ifunderstand you correctly my phone actually came from one of the UK cellphone providers ?

Hay! mine was a branded T-mobile ;-) . People go on about you should buy a Vanilla nokia (from nokia store) but the product code will still be UK!......  I know people on here will say thats not true but please tell me WHY they are still stuck on V12 and I got mine the day it came out and it had V10.Now on V30.033

I really would like to help upgrade your N96.. Cos TBH its a great mobile once set free.

Also if you do it?............. You use NSU for V20 and the OTA for V30.033.... Cos NSU will not find V30.033

Thks for the help. Gpt version 20 installed NSU ( OTA did not detect it ) and now version 30 is downloading OTA. Should be done in 15 mins

yes you were very helpful and I am now all set up with 30.033. Two of my applications ( Yahoo Go and Skype stopped working after the install ) so I am going to have to reisntall them. Otherwise the phone seems fine. I have not noticed that much difference in speed though.
