If you're using Windows Vista you might well run into problems. See here.

If reinstalling it doesn't solve the problem you might want to consider uninstalling all your Nokia software from the computer and starting from scratch. Uninstalling the stuff shouldn't erase the backups made previously.

If you have another PC or laptop then install PC Suite on it.
Next copy the folder from program files and paste it in the PC that you couldn't install/uninstall and then it should uninstall/install/repair. Somehow the install procedure got interrupted probably by the user and it is unable to work because all the needed files for installing/reinstalling/repairing are not in the folder in program files or the entire folder has been deleted. Replacing that folder in program files will enable the program to access the files it needs to finish the task.

You can't. It is not possible to downgrade to an earlier firmware version.

I am having same problems (XP user), so frustrating, it's NSU v1.4.32en I cannot remove, when I try and uninstall it I get the message 'This action is only valid for products that are currently installed.' and when I try and install the latest version I get the message 'Missing Software Components. Critical software components are missing. Please reinstall.' then Error 1720.....
Anyway I followed some suggestions, notably uninstalling all trace of Nokia programs (PC Suite & N Series PC Suite) then searching my PC for any Nokia .msi files and deleting those too along with all possible Temp files/folders, then I've tried installing lastest NSU again and still get the same result but also get 'Error 1714. The older version of Nokia Software Updater cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group.' when trying to run the NSUsetup.msi
I've also just reinstalled N Series PC Suite and the Nokia Nseries Update Manager has been stuck on 'Checking for the latest software versions. Please wait' for the last hour and 10mins!
Luckily I've been able to get hold of a laptop to update my N95 8GB later today, but what happens in the future - I' stuck with never being able to update my phone on my desktop (and only) PC... That would be reason enough not to buy another Nokia N series phone and move to another make after 7+ years of nokias.....
The tech support need to sort this problem out asap before they start losing customers.
Not a trace of old NSU versions available too

After talking to the technical support and follow his instruction, problem still occur.
step taken
1. Uninstall but fail
2. Disable Anti virus and firewall
3. Download new version of NSU. installation fail.
4. Final he said that the new NSU only support xp with service pack 1 and 2. I am using service pack 3. Was told to remove servic pack 3.
5. Uninstall still fail.
Last solution by technical support - bring my phone down to nokia centre to get any update.

1. Download and install 7-Zip. Don't worry it's free!
(No, neither WinRAR nor WinZip will do for this)
Get it here: http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
2. Use 7-Zip to extract the contents of NokiaSoftwareUpdaterSetup_en.exe into a folder. You should now have a bunch of folders and a few files.
3. Go into Packages, then NokiaSoftwareUpdater, then Setup
4. Launch NokiaSoftwareUpdater.msi (double-click it).
5. That's it!
I think the problem must be a script Nokia have used in their combined installer, which in itself is unnecessary as NokiaSoftwareUpdater.msi will start the installers for the other apps and drivers anyway. Those crazy Fins!
Whatever, this worked for me so hopefully it'll work for you too! :-)

Check both firewalls and application filters if you have one. Some registry components are being blocked. Hope this works out. Good luck
