N95 8GB - Untrusted software found on mass memory

N95 8GB - Untrusted software found on mass memory

Upgraded to v20.0.016 at the local Nokia service centre. Before upgrade, I formatted the mass memory.

I noticed that whenever I install a theme on mass memory, a SIS file is created in E:\Private\10202DCE, with this SIS file the error message "Untrusted software found on mass memory...." appears when the phone starts up and it is annoying.

If I manually delete the SIS file, the error message disappear but if another new theme is installed on mass memory, another SIS file is generated in the same location, thus brings back the same problem. I am getting frustrated with this and install themes on phone memory, so I am not getting anymore error messages during boot up.

Question is why this is happening? Previously with V15 I am not having this annoying problem.

I hope that someone can help as I do not wish to install themes on phone memory as it is limited, I would rather have then installed on mass memory which is 8GB in size.

I have the same problem. Although in my case, I can't find where the file is.. I tried to look at the E: folder but it doesn't have any private folder in it.

Re: N95 8GB - Untrusted software found on mass memory

The new version of the software is simply detecting that you have installed an application which does not have a recognised certificate.

Provided that you are confident that any apps you have installed are from sources that you trust, don't worry about it. If you aren't sure, check through the stuff that you have installed.

Re: N95 8GB - Untrusted software found on mass memory

When you install an app onto an S60 phone, you are given the choice to select either phone memory or memory card (or 'mass storage' instead of the latter for 8Gb models).

All of the features in your phone, App Manager, Music Player etc. find installed media that is relevant to them irrespective of where you chose to store it on the phone. The Applications option in the menu is not a folder in which apps are stored, it is just a menu in which you can select the apps to run.

Newer phone software versions seem to be making more checks on installed media, which is what you are noticing. It doesn't happen for apps stored in phone memory, perhaps it is a feature designed to protect you from dodgy apps if you install somebody else's memory card in your phone, which was not removed from the software of the mass storage models where it is superfluous...

I had the same problem and it was down to me having installed themes on the mass memory. I removed them, reinstalled on phone memory and the problem was gone.

Re: N95 8GB - Untrusted software found on mass memory

Installing theme on mass memory does not give me this problem prior v20 firmware upgrade. I have quite a number of themes which take up huge space, thus it will be defeating the purpose of having a 8GB mass memory but can't install theme on it :smileysad:

Re: N95 8GB - Untrusted software found on mass memory

It's not a case of you can't install them in mass memory, phones are becoming more and more sophisticated and lots of people are producing installable media, apps from legitmate companies or independent developers will usually have a certificate recognisable by the phone, but many of the simpler apps (like the thousands of home-made themes) available on the internet don't have such reassurance.

The SIS file is equivalent to an EXE file in Windows, it can make changes to the phone's settings and OS, and may also be harmful. It is therefore a good thing that phones are able to regulate their content in this way.

Re: N95 8GB - Untrusted software found on mass memory

Hi.
I've just got myself a Nokia E71 and immediately searched the web for free themes which are compatible with it. Found lots which are really for E61 (and other S60 phones) but worked well with it. Also found other free software and installed into the E71 with no problems. And they worked!
However, when I switched it off and turned it on again, the alarming "Untrusted Software found on mass memory" message appeared".
Have tried all the other suggestions i've found on the internet but none of them worked, including the one which said to delete the sis files found in the Private folder in the memory card etc.. It only worked, until i install another theme, or install another program. WHich meant i had to keep deleting those sis files in the Private folder. Of course the message doesnt appear if i chose to install the themes and the software on the phone memory, but what a waste of the memory card that is.
To cut a long story short, I stumbled on the SOLUTION by:
1) Creating a folder which I called "Installers" in the memory card (using the Nokia USB cable in Data Storage mode)
2)Copied all the installers for the themes and software there first.
3)Disconnected the NOkia USB Cable
4) Ran the installers using the File Manager in the phone.
VIOLA! The unwanted message which appears on phone startup was never seen again! Hope this helped.
I am just hoping that this is applicable to all s60 nokia phones.

Re: N95 8GB - Untrusted software found on mass memory

Yeah.....................Yeah......... Good.

Like me, many many people had this problem (Untrusted software found on your memory card. Go to Application Manager to install the software).

And your suggestion to create a folder on MMC (to keep that culprit theme in it) did work well.

Re: N95 8GB - Untrusted software found on mass memory

When you ran the installer after doing this did you install the theme onto the phone or your MMC? Because I did exactly as you suggested then ran the installer for the theme and installed it onto my MMC but still got the message about untrusted software found on mass memory when I rebooted my E71.

Re: N95 8GB - Untrusted software found on mass memory

My post can help all those guys, who is facing the problem of "installing",when they start there phone,
Don't worry about,i know your phone is working too much slowly also,Is this correct?
So go to (Application) then (App manager),you'll find there all applications, which you have installed on your phone or memory.See all the applications,So now if the any software is showing "not installed".so go on the software, click option, and try to install(if you have Internet facility).if its not get install,so don't waste your time to remove it.when you'll see that all of software are showing now installed,so then off your power of phone, and restart.i'll be done.

Re: N95 8GB - Untrusted software found on mass memory

I'm sorry.
ricosuave's solution to avoid the unwanted message (you've an untrusted software on your memory....) worked only for a while (that's why my above message).

But later on I found that the same message appeared again.

sorry fella, no lasting solution till now (except, of course, to remove the offending ware completely).

Re: N95 8GB - Untrusted software found on mass memory

simply stated...just format the mass memory but before doing so save the folders which are needed in your computer.

Re: N95 8GB - Untrusted software found on mass memory

But the problem is bound to resurface once we reinstall the themes/wares.

Re: N95 8GB - Untrusted software found on mass memory

no the problem will not come up once you format your mass memory.
i know it. i have had this problem and solved it too

1) backup settings, messages, contacts.
2) the songs and images, videos you want should be saved using nokia pc suite STORE IMAGES.

3) after you have done the above, format the phone memory and mass memory.

THEN see the problem will be vanished.

Re: N95 8GB - Untrusted software found on mass memory

they don't support all the (unwanted) softwares available in the market.

But still, this problem doesn't give me much problems. I was discussing for the sake of this thread only.
