N82 firmware update

Hi,

I have an N82 which I've faithfully stuck by since mid-2008. I got it with firmware version V30.0.019 loaded, and have periodically tried via PC Suite, Nokia Software Updater and Ovi Suite to check for updates to this, to which each time the response has been that my firmware was in fact up-to-date.

Imagine my surprise when I randomly Googled around earlier this week and found out that the N82 firmware is touching V35 now! Where have I been?!

Basically all the associated Nokia software tells me my N82 with V30 is up-to-date. The website however, when I enter the "code number" found behind the battery, tells me I should be updating to V35. What could be the reason for this? Can I download standalone installer for firmware updates somehow?

I'm located in India, and my phone is not tied to a carrier..

Re: N82 firmware update

The most likely explanation is that whoever sold you the phone changed the product code.

Do you have a Finnish N82?

Re: N82 firmware update

I'm not sure what "changed the product code" means. So you're saying that the product code in the firmware (or ROM, or NAND-whatever, or wherever else it's stored) might not match the one printed beneath the battery? Is there any way I can find out?

Also, how do I find out if I have a Finnish N82? I'm in India, and bought the unit here..

Re: N82 firmware update

Thanks.

Did that, and it only says "Made by Nokia" - no mention of any country. A cursory web-search tells me it shouldn't really make a difference though?

Re: N82 firmware update

I am not sure if it's the same, but you could have a look at this.

Anyway, in my opinion, authentic Nokia phones are these which write 'MADE IN FINLAND'. So, if your phone doesn't write MADE IN FINLAND, isn't, probably, authentic. That's the reason you have this problem when you try to update your firmware and it says it's up to date. That's my opinion.

Re: N82 firmware update

That can hardly be true, given that Nokia has factories all over the world. In any case, I followed your link, and checked my IMEI here: http://www.numberingplans.com/?page=analysis&sub=imeinr

which says Primary Market: Europe

Does/can this have any bearing on my issue?

Re: N82 firmware update

You were most likely sold an European model and the seller changed the product code so that you would have the necessary languages for your region. If you were to change it back to a Euro product code and update, you would lose any languages for your region and be replaced with European. So your probably best waiting to see if Nokia get around to releasing the update for your code.

Re: N82 firmware update

If you got your phone from your cell carrier, they have likely locked it. Unless they "release" a new update, you are stuck with what is on the phone. If you bought an unlocked phone and used your carrier's SIM card, that is another story.
If I have helped you with your problem in some way, please take a little time and hit the kudos button in my post. Without your feedback, I don't know if I am being helpful or should just be put out to pasture. :smileyhappy:

Re: N82 firmware update

Thank you dilbert! This indeed seems to have been the case - I used some software to read the product code off the phone, and it was completely different from the one on the product sticker!

And plugging in the internal product code into the Nokia site tells me that that particular code remains at V30, hence my issues.

Woot, super. This clears up things :smileyhappy:

Re: N82 firmware update

Just to update: That was in fact the problem - the internal product code had been modified. I was able to change it back to the original 'sticker' product code after which the firmware update came through without a hitch. Thanks folks!
