Hi everyone, thanks for all your advice and comments now that v21.002 has been released here (both on FOTA and NSU) are the changes I have noticed, along with some newly discovered bugs:
NOTE: all the documented features/improvements are performed with the Theme Effects turned on.
The update size from v20.149 to v21.002 is 214kb. Update takes about two minutes to complete.
Changes/Improvements/New features I have noticed from v20.149 to v21.002:
Standby screen:
*When Music Player is operating, and seeing the track name on the screen, and then when one song ends and goes to the next track, the speed at which this happens has almost no lag now compared to 20.149 where it still had some noticeable lag.
Call log, Contacts and calling function:
*Calling speed (from standby screen to Contacts or Call Log) and transition to call/disconnected screens even faster than 20.149, is instantaneous now.
*Even faster resume of music playback after call is ended, I would say it is instantaneous
*Now keypad tones are enabled when phone call is on loudspeaker, you can hear the tones when pressing buttons, which was previously not available
Maps:
*Maps startup is now almost instantaneous, speed through all the Maps menus very fast
*Switching to different views is very smooth and fast now, i.e. to Map 3D etc.
*Maps version 2.0 week 39 remains the same
Music Player:
*When playing music, and playing visulisations and changing the volume, a new volume slider bar appears at the top of the screen.
Camera and Photos:
*Updating of pixelation in images (i.e. to smooth the picture out) when zooming in is faster than before
*Going into Details is faster than before, is not full screen view as it was before
*Scrolling speed through thumbnails is only minimally jerky now, transition back from playing videos to the Photo Gallery is now smooth and no blockiness appears
*More menu options added, not sure if all of these were already in 20.149, but they do appear new: Video mode, Go to Photo. Also when keypad is locked and you turn to resume, it says Camera On Standby.
*When going into Scene Modes in Camera, description text is now blue and not white, making it hard to read
*A few changes to the appearance of Flash Options, ISO etc etc in Camera.
Settings:
*When going into the Settings menu, previously it would be able to be seen that the items were being 'loaded' or were 'catching up' - this speed is now very much improved and items appear almost instantaneously.
*Changing Network Mode from UMTS to GSM and vice-versa no longer appears blocky and is now instantaneous
Other:
*Overall system speed has been improved so it is even faster than 20.149
*Breathing lights come on instantaneously and are now faster
*Naviwheel performance has been tweaked even more, now is very useable in the main menu and has been improved again for the Music Player.
*Help menu speed from loading one article to another is now much faster.
*Msg Reader performance much improved, message display no longer lags when reading of one message has been completed and reading of next message begins
*N-gage application version has remained the same
Other documented changes that have been stated by others for v21.002:
*Improvements:
Improvements to general stability of phone, Bluetooth audio enhancements, photo UI developments and email upgrades (i.e. Mail For Exchange has been updated).
*luyul user here on Nokia boards: "I did notice the music player opens a little faster now. As for the volume on the FM trasmitter, it does seems a touch louder.. perhaps 10% or so."
*dwedgbury user here on Nokia boards: "Photos - Tag Browser: still unable to browse photos by tags, dumped out to standby screen".

ah ok, thanks Michaels. sorry about that my bad, I wasn't aware that 'official' was misleading users, I just named it official to make it into the main point that users could discuss all their errors.
Thanks Dwedgbury for linking the other thread to this one, so everyone can collate all their discussions in this one thread for the firmware. Appreciate your experiences with N78 as always man.
I've been using the firmware for a couple of hours now and noticed that some bugs already remain, such as the music player freezing and the lights not dimming after the keypad is locked. Will get back to everyone with the full bug list from 20.149 to see if they have been rectified. Just need a couple of days use to test it all out. So far, the update does seem pretty minor, hopefully v30 will come out later on down the track.

- Does not allow you to enter the Date and Time or Alarm Clock settings, instead going back to the main menu – FIXED
- Carousel menu by pressing silver key, performance is inconsistent, sometimes appearing with scroll bar and sometimes not – IMPROVED, now all entries in the menu have a scroll bar whether they need it or not, performance still slow though when multi-tasking.
- Still no N-Gage client embedded within the firmware – UNFIXED
- Unable to zoom in the camera/Photos when Music Player is active and FM transmission active – UNFIXED, however volume when just playing Music normally – FIXED, is correct and not adjusted along with the zoom as was before
- The Music Player track playing time and name of track does not appear in the place that it should be on the standby screen – UNFIXED
- When receiving text messages while the FM transmitter is activated, or while earphones are plugged in and listening to music, the sound output goes through the loudspeakers and not the earphones – UNFIXED
- When skipping from one track to another in the music player (through most of the 200 tracks I have), I got to track 190 then immediately pressed to fast forward through that track and the phone froze – FIXED
- When Music Player playing song and you go to Carousel menu, the Now Playing entry for the song is for the wrong song – FIXED
- When scrolling fast through albums or song list in the Music Player, ‘fast’ text is displayed at the top left of the screen – UNFIXED. Where fast scroll is also carried through to the menu sometimes – UNFIXED
- When recording video in low light, the camera flash keeps blinking on and off continuously while video is being recorded – UNFIXED
- When exiting an application like Windows Live Messenger or when web browsing and the 3G cuts out, then exit back to the standby screen, instead of the network name being displayed it is replaced with the numbers 999 999 – UNSEEN YET
- Not able to add tags to photo, you are able to add tags in the Details part of a photo, but when you enter the Tags option in the Photos menu, the application bombs out – UNFIXED
- When people call, sometimes their number is displayed instead of their name which has already been stored in the phonebook for a long time – UNSEEN YET
- FM transmitter does not automatically deactivate when a proper Exit is selected from the Music Player – UNFIXED
- Left key selection is now worse, in that I have problems unlocking the phone in the Music Player – UNSEEN YET
- Problem with the phone and its music library playback, my library was usually fine, but then I chose some songs to play and it sorted the album in the wrong order. Therefore had to refresh library – UNSEEN YET
- The phone used to autolock and the lights would dim straight away, now the phone autolocks but takes another few seconds before it dims the lights – UNFIXED, still occurs on some occasions
- The screen backlight remained on for the entire duration of the phone call – UNSEEN YET
- In a phone call, when I pressed the left soft key to go into the Options, no menu appeared it just put the call on hold – FIXED
- Having to press right key twice or three times to exit menus in the phone – IMPROVED, seems to have been fixed quite a lot to match the other soft key fixes
- Phone freezes after transferring music to the device from a PC in Mass Storage mode, freezing after phone asks if “USB synchronization complete, do you want to refresh?” and select Yes. Sometimes prompt appears, sometimes not – UNTESTED YET
- When you are in any theme, and have the Theme Effects turned off, then you go into each individual text message to view it, then go to the next message, the screen will go blank and then come up with the next message i.e. no proper flowing transition occurs – UNFIXED
- While playing music in the Music Player, and then entering the FM radio (while songs are still playing), the music already being played back stutters for a couple of seconds before it finally goes into the radio application and the radio station starts playing – UNFIXED
- When first opening main menu after startup, scrollbar will be displayed though there are only twelve entries. When you enter a sub-menu, and then go back the scrollbar will disappear – UNFIXED
- When in Settings > General > Navi-wheel, and then opening Options > Help, the help text about enhancement settings is displayed instead of the one about the Navi wheel settings – UNFIXED
- Sometimes freezes when trying to fast forward through a mp3 track in the Music Player, then going back up and selecting the music player in the Active Standby screen – FIXED
- When activating voice commands from the phone (push and hold the right soft key), the text label for both left and right soft-keys flashes up with the text “text_softkey” before jumping back to the home screen (with a mini-zoom if you have menu effects turned on) and then launching the voice command app – UNFIXED
- Screen backlight doesn’t turn off completely when recording audio in the Voice Recorder application – UNFIXED
- Audio not synchronized with video when playing back FLV videos in the Adobe Flash Lite 3.0 Player (i.e. through the file manager) – UNFIXED, tried several several times and it is still not working
- When starting up phone, a few seconds after the phone is booted and you press the button to bring up the Task Manager, then tasks such as “carousel” are displayed, then disappear when the phone processes are loaded – UNFIXED
- If you are in music player and your phone is set to autolock the keypad after ten seconds or whatever integer you have set it to, sometimes it dims and locks the keypad and at other times it doesn’t lock the keypad – UNFIXED
- When Visualisations are playing in the Music Player, and the FM transmitter is also active, the audio plays through the loudspeaker instead of staying transmitted – UNFIXED
- When going into Notes in Office applications, and say you immediately press Exit to go back, the menu transitions go all weird as if they have turned themselves off, until you go backwards into the main menu. This is noticeable in all themes, though most noticeable in the Haze effect – UNFIXED
- Phone freezes completely, when I have taken a photo zoomed in then used the Task Manager to exit back to the main menu
- Phone freezes completely, when I am looking at Visualisations in Music Player while playing song and FM transmitter is active, then going into the next visualization to have a look.
- When Music Player is playing song, and while call is being made, you can hear both the music and the song going through the speaker
- When you are in the Carousel menu, and watching the Now Playing song entry, and the next track appears, the scrolling of the song title is wrong. For long song titles, it will scroll maybe half of the song title for a couple of times, then after about three or four go’s it finally scrolls the whole song title
- that the zoom status in the Photos application (i.e. Zoom 33% etc) now fades out and doesn’t just disappear as in previous firmwares
- peak RAM usage seems to remain the same at around 47 to 50MB

after having used the firmware for a couple of days, and after a slew of the intial bugs appearing, i can now say that well the phone seems a lot more stable than it did under v20.149, especially with respect to the Music Player. it has not reset or frozen in a number of days, and i have also noticed that:
* the speed with which the album runtime at the top of the screen when going into an album to view the songs is now much faster than before and is almost instantaneous
i'm sure there are plenty more changes, i just haven't noticed them yet i suppose
