Actually for posterity and ease of access here is a summary of the solution :
Yes its one of those simple cases that probably wasn’t checked in testing and unfortuately will cause the classic “this thing is **bleep**” response from first time users that get themselves tangled up. The solution is VERY simple for people. To re-iterate :
1) On nokia 5800 V20 the lock code input defaults to alpha-numeric and the default code is unfortunately 12345. To input numeric simply hold the # key for a second or so and the keypad mode will change to numeric input. You will have to do this every time you input the lock code if you keep it numeric.
2) On nokia 5800 V21 the lock code input was changed to default to numeric which will work fine for people who haven’t changed their lockcode to alpha but will bite anyone who has (i.e. those upgrading from V20 that managed to get the lockcode changed to an alpha). To change to alpha-numeric input again hold the # key for a second or so.
Thanks Walker for your solution…it might be worth posting widely.
Cheers

Holding the GREEN, RED and CAMERA buttons didn't work for me.
I stupidly changed my key lock code to 9999. Now when I try and unlock the keypad I dial the emergency services and therefore can't unlock it!
Can anyone help please!

I persevered with this and it eventually worked! My phone unlocked without a key code. Problem was it reset the phone to factory settings (I hadn't backed up my phone up since getting it six months ago, so had lost a lot of contacts plus it took me hours to get my phone back to the personal settings.) I've also managed to set a new key lock code.
I hate the phone, I don't find it intuitive, why isn't there a back button!
Still the main thing is that you can avoid taking your phone to Nokia and getting a nasty bill so do keep trying this even if it means two pairs of hands, it does work!

Hi i am now on v50.0.005 of the software for this damn phone and for ages I have not been able to change the lock code.
Periodically when it boots up it asks for the code, I can enter anything and it will just say code error and then work normally!
The problem is that my contract is up in 3 weeks and I'll be getting a new phone. When I get a new phone I normally sell the old one.
Since i don't know the lock code and the phone is set to lock on change of sim card it's as much use as a brick to anyone else!!! I have tried another sim card on the same network (o2) and it will not proceed beyond requesting the code.
I've tried the red+green+camera several times but all it does is wipe the phone, the lock code doesn't reset to 12345.
Any ideas?? (other than taking it to a nokia service point!)
Thanks.
