I too have made the mistake of moving to nokia. I have used sonyericsson devices for years, but due to there not being a device currently I wanted, and my upgrade was due, vodafone made me a very good deal in getting the N97. Phone seems ok, but have just encountered an issue to do with nokia maps, and my experience of nokia support is not a good one. All phones from all manufactures experience issues, but it is how the manufacture deals with this that matters. If like nokia they blame the networks or who ever for the delays in release of a new firmware, then customers get anoyed by being messed about. It also depends on whether the update is of any benifit as well, maybe the manufactures should release information as to what the update fixes of introduces so the customer can decide whether to install it or not. As many people discover, a new update comes out so they assume it is a good thing, only to run into more issues, I am a firm beliver in if it isnt broken dont fix it, so if your phone is working fine why update unless there is a major reason to do so such as added features. Sonyericsson released an update for the C905 which brought to it camera and messaging features which was a very worthwhile update, yet other updates have not been worth doing, simply fixing issues that only certain people were having mainly due to how they used their phones, that others would not maybe encounter. This is only my opinion, but my current view of nokia is they have got too big, release too many devices, and have nowhere near enough people to rectifiy the issues that come up in everyday use. More and more manufactures are using the general public as beta testers when they release a new product, as they do not have the manpower to do all the testing in house.

OMG. I have been waiting for an firmware update for my unlocked (legit) N75 forever. The current firmware (which is the original) is buggy. I cannot change settings on my phone because it has a blank screen when settings is selected and the firmware restore does not fix it.

Not sure, they probably care about whats next and whats new, and when they release their new flagship device and produce a few more firmwares for it they say ok what ever, move on.
OR
they have so much products to control and services to attend to, like OVI and their always releasing new things.
BUT
they release things that arn't even final yet...for example the Nokia N97 firmware..seriously....... they release so much things too fast. they don't even think about what users want and the range of people like teenagers, adults, business people. They just release random new ideas that seem great.
For example, Apple took the time to study and perfect their software. BUT it is also probably because apple doesn't have much mobile devices to attend to, so they have more time to focus on a specific product.
I really do hope Nokia releases more firmware for the N97 so it could be just as perfect as the iphone software.
personally new Nokia design releases are kind of boring and they all look the same...

They care...

Wait, that's all you're going to say?
"They care..."
You've convinced this guy.

This is a big issue with the N97 also, so its not a one off, we have 3 here at work and 3 out of 3 do it.
all since updating to the V20 firmware.
Nokia rush products out the door so instead of giving you the device they advertise you have to wait for 12 months worth of firmware before the device becomes what was advertised!!
You dont see apple releasing product every month or second month do you? there is no need to, its a money grab for the large portion of market share they are losing to others who actually put time in to making their devices.
you ask most customers with N97's how they feel about their purchase & if they would do it again knowing the issues that are still ahead of us? i for one having paid close to $1000AUD for mine as soon as it was released as a "flagship" device after all the hype and build up feel ripped off, ive basically thrown $1000 away (outright no contract, i feel sorry for those on contracts stuck with the things!!)

Well, I had three Nokia phones: 8310, N80 and the last, the 6600i slide.
8310 and N80 needed several updates and N80 was very slow and with bad general performances.
My last mistake was the 6600i slide. I thought it was a good phone.
I'm still waiting a firmware patch to use it (display black after 10 seconds also with slide open).
They care about selling and selling.
Aftermarket service is below standard.
That's all.

i think this disaster happens from the release of n96
i found that all my friends r complaining about their nokia phones
i had nokia 3310,7210,6630,6680,3250,n70,n73,n95
and they were all great
but my 5530 and 5800
i hate them alot
my 5530 restart every 20 min on the standby mode
ram always full
restart if i talked more than 5 min
and for my 5800
it is too slow
its ram is not that much
no 20 contacts or widgets on homescreen
and no kinetic scroll
and in the end i found hope when nokia announced the symbian^2
and heard in some website it will be for s60v5 phones
but now disappointed when ppl told me that it may be only captible for n97
really am down and angry
i think its our time to change from nokia
((sorry for my english))

That's really great strategy to Focus on 1 device per year and doon't focus 15 devices per week.... you can't release 15 devices and do good service for them.... I think, i home not only me, that 1 good device more well than 15 bad devices. am i right?

in the past i loved my nokia phones! i've had all possible phones from sagems, to siemens phones, sony erricson... name it, i've had it..and they all sucked compared to nokia. it's obvious that with time nokia had become sloppy at their work. My old nokias (3310, 6151) worked perfectly, the 6151 even survived a puke-attack (well, some people just don't look where they vomit lands
DD). well after a while i got bored with the phone and wanted something with a better camera, so i bought the 660i slide... epic fail i tell you!
no nokia support, no new software, and if there is something, we can't update it on the phone, because the updater doesn't support our phone... so to shorten the story... i regret buying the phone

Well, you'll just miss out then. Sorry. This past week, I added more applications to my phone - you know, the ones you always seem to see in BlackBerry adverts - like Bloomberg -- Ovi is growing.
Also, I had the distinct pleasure of playing around a bit with the N97 (white) and N900 for about an hour this past week - fantastic. The thing about the N900 is the operating system is Maemo not Symbian. Scrolling through the menus leads me to the familiar applications I really appreciate - and of course new ones. The N900 got a real boost in my books has @5FM had a tech geek look at it. Both the N97 and N900 are powerful media phones - the N900 more so. Very likely the phones I would have owned if I continued with the NSeries from my N70. If I had to wage a bet, I'd say the next Communicator will run Maemo OS - and it may very well be the replacement for my E90.
Cheers, thanks ![]()

I think they do, they just make mistakes.
I want to say firstly that I really like Nokia phones, and I have had a few (all of which I still have) but with recent admission by Nokia that the N97 was flawed firmware and hardware wise (even though Nokia don’t refer to this in such extreme terms J ), I think it’s time for me to move on. Also it’s surly not right that such am expensive piece of kit should have to repaired by so many owners in the very earl days of ownership.
I do not think that any phone is going to be 100 perfect, but the N97 software is so dated and far behind the curve, firmware innovation wise that I'm left feeling a sense of envy of other makes, like Android 2.1 or the upcoming Windows 7. I have been looking at other smart phones, namely the Motorola Droid, Nexus One the Sony Ericsson X10.
The specification of the N97 should have made it a world beater in the world of smart phones but poor software dodgy hardware and a early bury the head in the sand mentality of Nokia and later admission of it short fallings have left us holding a real lemon in the world of smart phones. I say that because it still functions as a simple phone (barely) signal permitting, but is laughable as a real smart phone. It has all the ingredients but let down by poor implementation from a QA and firmware standpoint. I just think with all the other smart phones on the market that have good software integration of services that the N97 just lacks any thought about what we come to expect from Nokia launching a ‘facebook’ type phone.
Nokia touted the N97 as a feature rich phone with good upgradeability, but in my personal opinion the firmware/software is not cohesive, and we all know about the hardware failings. I think I big enough to take it on the chin that’s why I’ve been looking at other makes and types of OS’s.
What’s clear is that Symbian 3 & Symbian 4 may well change the much outdated version on the N97, but once again we are going to have to trust Nokia to get the hardware right to match.
But even so I think I will go and be someone else’s guinea pig for a while(can that be any worse than the N97 debacle), understanding that if I want to have the latest and greatest I have to take a risk that the manufacturer gets it right, and provides fast, lasting support for whatever handset I buy.
However every phone model that I am currently looking at has some issue or other e.g. The Motorola Milestone, Sony Ericsson X10, and even the Nexus One
With that said I have ordered a Nexus One and have consigned my N97 to my bedside draw with a hope that sometime in the near future Nokia releases a worthwhile firmware update for it.

They care. Its just that they have too many phones to work on. Even discontinued phones, like the n95, are still being sold and used in various parts of the world. Even the n70 is still being sold and used. And not all of them on the same platform as well, and each phone has firmware of its own, unique to that of others, unlike the Iphone which to some extent has cross-upgrading software.
This is the case IMO, and my conjecture being backed up since Nokia announced that it will be dropping the number of released models for the coming years so they could focus more on the development. I think they HAVE learned from the n97, hence this move. They had difficulty in fixing it since they were spread thin over too many models.
