E71 firmware update - for dummies

Is there a guide anywhere on things to do before updating your firmware, for dummies like myself.

I'm hoping to update my E71 to the recently released version but would like to minimise any downstream problems.

I'm guessing that I'll have to reinstall numerous S60 applications, but will my licenses (e.g. for Maps) get messed up or retained.

There's possibly a web page or E71 enthusiasts site somewhere, any pointers welcomed

thanks

Re: E71 firmware update - for dummies

Make a complete backup, either use PC suite on your computer via the USB cable or goto Menu | Tools | Sync and use "My Nokia Backup or Ovi.com (if your registered).

Make a list of your installed apps and do a complete reset of the phone when you start - perhaps someone here can advise the reset code as I cant remember it.

Use Pc Suite to upgrade the firmware and then restore your user data from the backup you chose, dont restore the phones system files as this may interfere with the firmware upgrade you've just completed...

Make sure everything works before you start the task of re-installing apps...!!

Re: E71 firmware update - for dummies

Here are some things to be aware of when doing a firmware upgrade on E71 (I ran into these issues):

1 - Use Nokia PC Suite to create a backup of your E71, you can select what objects you want to back up.

2 - Use MS Outlook or Vista Contacts to back up all your contacts (as a double safe-guard)

3 - TEST this backup by restoring it to your E71 before you do the firmware upgrade. Reason I am saying this is that I did not do this and the backup was never restored after I did the firmware upgrade. The restore function said:"There is no data to restore in this file ". I had to add all apps and settings manually after this failed restore.

4 - If restoring the backup works, download and install Nokia Firmware updater and update your firmware. Follow the instruction on the screen closely.

5 - After the firmware update, set the phone to the language it was in when you created the backup.

6 - Run the backup and HOPE it works.

7 - If restoring the backup doesn't work, you at least have your contacts in MS Outlook or Vista Contacts and you can use PC Suite sync to sync them back into the E7. If restore does not work (as in my case) still have to add your apps and settings manually.

Hope this helps

Also use the Memory utility in the phone to backup the phone to a memory card. Remember to pop the memory card out and keep it safely elsewhere until the upgrade is done.

Re: E71 firmware update - for dummies

If you have mail for exchange (MfE) running its not advisable to sync your contacts etc with the Nokia Suite Sync and outlook, my Nokia Backup or Ovi, when you install or use MfE it does tell you this, it may work but can cause sync headaches.

Other than that its pretty easy, just a few points to note.

When I updated mine, because I have an exchange service, I let the exchange service reinstall my contacts etc.

I also backed mine up using the Nokia PC Suite Content Copier application, I'd use the latest version of it because in the past I have had trouble with the earlier ones, and the E71. The first time I reloaded my stuff from the backup - MfE did not work, and in the end I reloaded the software and just sync'd with MfE - the stuff I had on the backup I just added individually with the content copier.

Back up things that you require are essential, before I used to back up my contacts separately because that is what I required most. Also if you have encypted the phone memory and the memory card, you should remove the encryption and the password protection from the memory card.

When you are ready to upgrade the software make sure that you have almost full battery in the phone, you can charge at the same time if you need to. You can take it to the extreme and ensure that your computer has a reliable power supply as well :smileywink: ie one thats not likely to go off!

Then follow the instructions in Nokia Software Updater.

The file it downloads is around 110mb, NEVER disconnect the phone from the PC when its updating this is the golden rule, it always pays to restart the computer and then the first thing you do after a restart is connect the phone then run the software updater, in the past I have had the driver detection service in windows go haywire when it switches the flash loader into play, and a restart cured this.

The software updater is pretty easy to use, just make sure the phone is not disconnected during the update.

Re: E71 firmware update - for dummies

Many thanks, some very useful and helpful advice here.

Still not sure what will happen to Nokia Maps license information (perhaps that is included in backup/restore data?)

Will probably have a go over the weekend

Thanks again :smileyhappy:

Re: E71 firmware update - for dummies

To retrieve your maps license you will need to allow nokia maps to connect to the internet so that it can recover your license.

More info can be found in the faqs on maps.nokia.com

Re: E71 firmware update - for dummies

Firmware updated without problems, contacts preserved, calendar lost (that's easy to restore).

Some apps preserved but many gone and will need restoring -- will try Nokia PC Suite to do most of that

You cannot revert to the old software.

I'd go through and do some diagnostics perhaps to a hard reset (after backing up important stuff) and only restore basic stuff like Contacts and Messages.

You can also reinstall Nokia Maps as well.
