I think Nokia should consider the SP2 for E-71.

One annoying thing is that any application keeps asking you the access point. I think this issue is not there with SP2 where the phone tries the Wifi and if not found then goes to GPRS/EDGE instead.

Also during a call, the voice command button should work as a 'record' button to record the conversation.

The fonts used in the entire phone are jarring. I am used to the WM fonts that are softer and smaller so can fit more on each screen.

Thanks

Yes the E61 has this feature as access points groups. where you can set the order and priority and even smtp settings and everything.

Its funny how you lose features as you "upgrade"

Re: E71 Firmware Update Fixes

imho, E71 was a hurried release to beat the iPhone 3G madness. Nokia is aware that there are many issues to be fixed if they want to be considered seriously.

Nokia should also start thinking aesthetics. Don't you guys think that the jarring large fonts, without any choice to make them smaller or change them, make the phone look very unprofessional compared to other phones it is competing with like the BB or the WM phones. Ok, not the BB.

I'm not sure if this is a feature or a bug: rotating images in the Gallery doesn't save the new orientation, i.e. after exiting the image viewer the image has reverted to its original orientation. With the built-in tools there's no way to rotate portrait images for example (maybe with an accelerometer images could have been auto-rotated during capturing..).

I don't know what's the use of such a feature. Does it exist only because of the sheer fun of rotating images?

I had this similar feature in my E61i which I hoped was a bug.

After reading through all the comments here I'm really surprised about how many unthought-out features or glitches E71 has. Among the worst is the business card scanning feature, which I doubt that anyone at Nokia has ever tested prior to the release of the phone.

I will also have to politely (and I stress 'politely') disagree with some of the admins here about people having to report these rants directly to Nokia Care (or similar). I've been discouraged numerous times by Nokia's help desk by their slow response time, inability to answer some software/hardware-related tougher questions, and their bad habit of not reading through what I've written in the mail in the first place. Their answers are at best just quotes from the user manual, which I always read through thoroughly. After all, this is Nokia Forums, the place where the designers, developers and other Nokia staff should read about real-world user experiences and take notes of them.

Ok, strictly speaking this isn't Nokia Forums, but provides invaluable feedback for Nokia nevertheless :smileyhappy:

Re: E71 Firmware Update Fixes

I'm having the same issue with my DEH-P980 car unit. Sometimes it works fine for a few seconds, then starts clicking/ skipping. Which is odd for an MP3.

I second the motion to add this to the list.

Re: E71 Firmware Update Fixes

@assid,

I agree that these issues should be resolved ASAP by Nokia, no doubt about it and I've never said otherwise.

However, fortunately for us there are workarounds to some of the E71 issues, that's it, plain and simple.

I want to add that I've been a Windows Mobile user since the year 2000 and I pretty know every feature, problem, hack and tweak to make them work properly. Believe me, Windows Mobile has much more issues than the E71 ever had. Many related to ODM/OEM manufacturers than the OS itself but there are many tweaks and 3rd party apps to make it a bit better.

Those Windows Mobile firmware upgrades you talk about are not even close as frequent as Nokia's, maybe you are talking about the firmwares xda-developers.com community release on a daily basis, but that's another story.

But so far my E71 has been outperforming in every aspect all my WM devices (HTC Trinity, HTC Kaiser, HTC Touch and Treo 750).

Be patient guys, Nokia will release a firmware update sooner or later, they always do.

Re: E71 Firmware Update Fixes

Another thing. Perhaps nokia can add a vpn client into this. Like something that the world uses like pptp. If they are really serious of taking this as a business phone. The least they can do is add the most common of business tools.

Heck, the iphone supports pptp vpn and this doesnt which is a total shame since the iphone initially wasnt being targeted as a business phone

Re: E71 Firmware Update Fixes

Oh yeah, another thing. GIVE ACCESS TO THE FRONT CAMERA. What the point of the front camera if we cant use it. Thats ridiculous! What if developers want to write something which uses data networks or whatever to make video calls.
OR
I want to use the the front camera for whatever reason. Its my phone. I should be able to do whatever I please with it. Every other phone company lets me use any camera thats connected.

Maybe the camera is just horrible quality and nokia doesnt want us to know. OR EVEN WORSE, the camera isnt really existant and its a hole doing nothing.

WELCOME TO PARANOIA CENTRAL!

The funny thing is N-series no problems, this is only for the E-series. Another sour note for us e-series owners.

The Operator Selection option does not stay on Manual once selected and reverts back to Automatic after being changed to Manual.

One button camera launch to the user defined settings...

I hate having to fumble through the menus just to switch the flash off each time! -I miss too many photos.

Re: E71 Firmware Update Fixes

After making a few video recordings I start to lose like 30 seconds worth of sound near the end of the video. I got a brand new replacement from 3 but I still have the same problem. 3 told me if the problem continues they will send my phone of to Nokia. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem?

There is a VPN - you just have to have an appropriate profile created (on the server, I believe). Google for E71 VPN and you should find some pointers...

When Nokia will develop the E71 firmware update?

We all have the same problem about the keyboard mapping, i bought the device just for the qwerty keyboard but it is qwertz. So weird. Nokia should do something for this mapping. Does anyone knows how to handle that situation?

I doubt that *all* people have keyboard mapping issues.

Have you tried changing the writing language? I don't know if it affects the keyboard layout though.

For your post to be helpful you should at least provide some additional information about your phone (what localization model it is for example).

I've got a problem with switching between applications while the Messaging application is sending a text message in the background.

Even with my older S40 phones I've been able to write an SMS, press Send, return to the stand-by screen and lock the keypad *while* the phone is sending the text message in the background. With my E71 pressing the Home button while the phone is sending the message results in an error message saying "Error: already in use." The text message doesn't get sent. I really have trouble figuring out what exactly is "IN USE" according to the phone, but, if after writing the message and pressing Send I just kindly wait for the "Sending text message" dialog to disappear, everything goes relatively smoothly.

In short, I'd like for the Messaging application to be able to send the message or e-mail in the background and not to be interrupted by the user changing to the standby screen simultaneously. It saves time, is true multi-tasking, and is a way of doing things that works already very well with other tasks in other applications. In my Finnish E71-1 only the Messaging application is having some hiccups.

@billshepp: Regarding the e71 vpn, it cant do pptp. Only IPSec. Most locations I work with have a quick pptp linkup. Even accessing my router has a pptp link.

Re: E71 Firmware Update Fixes

As a result of a dodgy supplied media card I lost my business card reader which worked really well (along with a bunch of music and pictures) and all Nokia could tell me "sorry about that. The Business card reader was not supplied by Nokia & is not available for download".

It came in the standard package - why can't I get it back, when it came with the phone and it was not my fault that it was lost (it was a fault with their supplied media card).

Can anyone help me restore the business card reader?

Re: E71 Firmware Update Fixes

Technically if you reformat your phone, you should get it back. But then I am not sure if the card reader was on phone memory OR memory card?! You may want to confirm this with someone.

Re: E71 Firmware Update Fixes

Cardreader is not part of the preinstalled internal set of applications. It came on the bundled microsd for you to install.

I can't believe that nobody has come forward with a post of a copy of Cardreader.
