It's been a month now, and I was wondering if there are still N96 users out there with unbranded, operator-free N96s and NOT able to update so far? (Especially Europe)
??
Thanx

Same problem - bloody annoying.
V12 is still buggy as hell.
Really dissappointed with the whole phone to be honest. The software has thus far been very poor indeed.

I have an unbranded N96 with code 0573313 and no sign of a new firmware
In fact, this has been my most expensive involvment in a BETA program ever
I haven't used it for the last 3 months
Why? Well, I can't trust it, I have missed many important phone calls due to the SW problems
My first Smartphone was a SE P990, terrible experiance with their "get the customer to pay for our BETA program"
Second attempt, this Nokai N96. They have also found that we are som stupid customers ready to pay for being part of the initial testing
There is nothing smart with these smartphones! Period!
The code that improves seems to be available, but not for me. The delay is unacceptable
So it is very unlikely that I will buy a new phone again from SE or Nokia
But, I am a stupid customer so, iPhone here I come

I sometimes feel like I am buying "beta phones" from Nokia. I mean, by the time the Firmware really settles then its like almost a year passed, and the new model is on the way. By the time the phone settles down, new models come out.
I feel like today is the time to buy N95 8GB now. Because the firmware is really good. But it's been one year since the phone came out. N96's firmware V12 is still looks like "beta", and it's been more than a month, but there is still no sign of V20 for many product numbers.
And the N97? God knows how long it will take the phone's firmware to really settle down.
I feel like Nokia is releasing the phones at least 6 months early, while they are still in their "beta and testing phase". We, the customers are the ones who are testing these phones and posting over here and Nokia is fixing them. So Nokia should stop paying those engineers, who are supposed to test the phones before they are released. We should get paid by Nokia.
And we still keep buying Nokia, could it be that the problem is "us", not Nokia?

But you have to ask yourself is the grass always greener on the other side?
If you look at forums for smartphones from all of the other major manufacturers you will see similar stories on all of them.

Yes. I have an N96 0573063 stuck on v12.043 - unbranded from a 'Nokia' store. v12 is hardly the most stable mobile phone OS I've ever had to use. Main daily problems are (1) the phone reboots when changing music track, and (2) the web browser exits occasionally when selecting bookmarks from the bookmark menu or whilst loading pages, and (3) "Opening" messages when navigating around the music player - even though the actual items have already loaded and are obscured by the "Opening" dialogue box (!).
I have been checking regularly for a software update since last year but nothing doing. Seeing as v20 isn't stable either, I may as well put up with v12, especially as the calendar is downgraded to 2 entries rather than 5. I'll check again towards the end of the year, maybe my 0573063 can be upgraded then?

I am, unfortunaly, very aware about "the green grass on the other side". I have been there
It doesn't help to know that others are having more problems
I have been in the IT business for more then 30 years and the sad conclusion is that more and more companies do not care about the after-market service annymore
I am also aware about the complexity developing these smart phone and other SW
And about the market pressure to release new models/features frequently
But in the long run, they will loose business if they do not take after-market service seriously
I have bought an expensive piece of junk that I can't use due to problems in a released product.
And I do not feel like I have Nokias attention

Yes, I can't update either.
product code: 0573063
Software version: 11.018
Software version date: 13-09-08
Custom version: 11.018.249.2
Custom version date: 03-10-08
Language set: 001
Model: Nokia N96
Type: RM-247
Latest update: 27/2/2009
Bought it from expansys in the UK, completely unbranded. One of the main reasons being so that I could always get the latest firmware, unlike previous phones I've had where I couldn't upgrade because the operator refused to allow it.
v20 has a *lot* of stuff in it that would make things much better for me, especially the improved email support,

Are you sure your phone is unbranded
Your product code indicates otherwise
what network are you on and where did you buy your phone

How would you know if his phone is "branded?" Is there any place on Web where you can check the product numbers and see if they are branded or not??

Information is available if you know where to look,
But in this case I have a freind with the same product code

synth_fg,
The 0573063 product code is indeed sim free, bought from nokia, even though there is another uk product code of 0568238. I contacted nokia and the advise I was given was to take my 0573063 phone, with proof of purchase, to a nokia service centre and i could have the new firmware flashed to the phone.

I bought my phone from expansys, not with any contract at all, with cold hard cash, lol.
I'm using a T-Mobile SIM card in it, but that's the one that came with my N73 a couple of years ago.
