I'm in the UK with a pukka new 5800 

When I check the phone software it tells me 30.0.011

When I go to the Nokia site it tells me latest is 31.0.101

If I try and update it says no updates available

What gives??

It depends how you are trying to update, if you are trying to do an OTA or (over the air update) on the device itself you don't always get the updates as the OTA server is seperate and is not always given all the updates.

Best to connect the phone to the Nokia Software Updater application for PC available here http://www.nokia.com/softwareupdate and do the update that way. You will more than likely get V31 that way

The latest firmware for the 5800 is V31. However, Nokia releases firmware updates in phases, so if may not be available for your particular product code yet. If you have a network branded handset, it will take even longer because the update has to be approved and modified by your network before Nokia can release it. So patience seems to be the key word here.

Which Nokia site told you V31 was the latest? Was it the Software Update site? And if so did you put the product code of your device i before it gave you that answer?

If you answer yes to the above then my advice will be most useful.

If you answered no then what Cjlim has written is pertinent and probably your solution here.

I have not tried the one that asks for product code - there next I suppose - it's not branded but, on it's three

The indication as given by following your link is the latest version for non-branded handsets usually hence the "asteriks" next to that version number explaining that this is not available for all handsets. 

Try entering your product code under the "can I update" link to see if your device does indeed qualify for this update which will either be available or not.

Thanks - it is because 3 - three in the UK appear to have handicapped the 5800 to 30.0.011

which also means I cannot take advantage of Nokia Ovi Maps Free Forever

how about just making the license cost nil ??

I feel a product code change coming on....
