"Curse of Silence" S60 3rd (Initial & FP1) & 2nd Edition (FP1 & 2) - Removal

[ Edited ]

If you have a Nokia S60 2nd Edition (Feature Pack 1 and Feature Pack 2) or 3rd Edition (Initial or Feature Pack 1) based device, which seems not to be accepting SMS or MMS messages, your handset may have been attacked using a published exploit that has recently been discovered. This is a type of Denial of Service (DoS) Attack.

The problem has been made public in various areas, and also in online videos.

If you are exhibiting the problem you can check this by sending yourself a message from the handset or from another phone (another phone is more practical) if you do not receive the messages after a few moments then your handset could be affected.

This software:

http://europe.nokia.com/smscleaner

Released on the 27th of January by Nokia can undo the problem. You should follow the details on the page, showing how to install the cleaner what it does and also its limitations.

You should install the software that is relevant for your device, to find out what version follow the link below.

Checking this page:

http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/matrix_all_1.html

Will tell you if your handset is running S60 and what feature pack it has.

Please Note:

The Cleaner will undo a phone that has been struck down by the crafted messages that caused it, however when the phone starts to accept any backed up messages, some of which could re-enable the DoS  you will then need to re-run the application again.

I'd imagine that if it is possible software updates will be released so that handsets affected by the error can be resolved.

edit: It would seem that where possible software updates will include closing this denial of service, the latest version (210) software for the Nokia E71 - seems to have removed the DoS vulnerability.
