Many of you would have purchased the Nokia N96 and are probably aware that the handset is capable of watching live TV as it has a built in DVB-H antenna.
If you have already tried to use the live TV feature, and you live in the UK, then you would have realised that this feature does not work.
This is because DVB-H is not broadcast in the UK.
Currently in the UK the service available is DVB-T, which stands for:
"
Digital
Video
Broadcasting -
Terrestrial" and is a digital replacement for analog television broadcasts.
"
Digital
Video
Broadcasting -
Handheld" is used specifically for mobile broadcasting purposes.
This is not Nokia's fault and therefore cannot be fixed as such. It is down to the country to provide the broadcasting service.
One of the big selling points of the N96 was this feature and many people are buying the phone for this very feature alone, without realising that it will not work.
DVB-H should be available in the UK after 2012.
More details of DVB-H can be found here:
http://www.dvb-h.org/Fortunately the BBC iPlayer can be downloaded to the N96 and you can stream the last 7 days programs from the handset.
This was rolled out for the N96(and other handsets), as a substitute for the LiveTv function.
You can find details of it
here.
