jim64, the Nokia specs on video formats are abysmally inadequate to generate media that will play on the 5800. One needs much more information such bitrates & resolutions, and for MPEG-4 and H.264/AVC information about supported profiles.
The way I would approach this is to figure out which software the OP has at hand and see if what it generates can be played on the 5800.
The best resolution the 5800 can handle is nHD (640x360) so use whatever software you have and generate test output from it at that resolution. If it plays, crank up the bitrates till you get satisfactory quality.
If anyone has details about specific profiles that are supported for MPEG-4 & H.264/AVC and information about maximum bitrates, please post here!

Some notes though.
5800 screen rez is nHD (640x360) so you can substitute QVGA in most cases for nHD. With some exceptions. RealVIdeo and WMV are not very supported in nHD.
Another thing is that h264 seems not to work very well unless you put it into a 3GP or 3G2 container. Mostly I'll try to stay away from H264 at this time, as there seem to be a lot of problems in S60 v5 with this codec.

el_loco,
The video specs for N96 and 5800/N97 are quite similar - does the information in your blog entry apply to the 5800/N97 also? And while I appreciate the information you have gathered from experience, Nokia should be publishing such relevant information in the first place!
I've been playing around with H.264 and MPEG-4 and have had some success on the 5800 - but I don't want to use QVGA, I want to generate nHD content. Again, I wish Nokia would make the details available that would get rid of the need for experimentation. Knowing this would eliminate the necessity to use specific applications to generate content and one could properly configure applications they own/use to the correct/expected configuration.

Yes the video specs should be similar in 5800 and N97.
nHD you're better off using MPEG-4 and not H264.
I agree, I hate the fact that I need to run a bunch of tests to try and find out what are the capabilities of the device. There used to be a program you could download if you registered yourself as a S60 developer to read the capabilities directly from the device, but that didn't help either, as it only reads what the encoder supports but not in which containers or which combinations of audio codec, video codec and container works.

I've had no luck trying to get information on improvements for video playback.
Seems that other issues with the N97 are more critical so no improvements seems to be coming to the next firmware. Also there doesn't seem to be as much complaints in the forum about the H264 problems and OVI suite only converts to MPEG-4 so I don't know...
Maybe we just need to use MPEG-4 for the time being.

Sorry to pickup an old thread but im having trouble with mp4 files. I always import video's with Ovi Suite. Its extremely slow but most of the time when i try to import mp4 files, there is no video when i play them on the phone. There is always a little thumbnail of the video in ovi suite but not with most mp4 files. And in the transfer them, they show up like they were a music file. So I have to convert the mp4 files into another format before importing them into my 5800.
I have Magic Video Converter which I always use for other converting purposes but I would really like some precise specs for 3gpp or 3gp2 for instance and have you succesfully imported working video files without Ovi Suit?

I have tried another free software available - Format Factory. Download from here.
http://www.brothersoft.com/download-formatfactory-
In the latest version it has the option for direct Nokia 5800XM conversion. You will be able to convert from any format to Nokia and it works fine, both audio and video.
Happy watching!

I use FFMPEG line converter or its best GUI, SUPER.
For information about them follow the link in my sig.
You can also purchase products from ImToo, Xilisoft or a handful others.
Videora, Red Kawa, AnyVideoConverter, etc.

I answered this question in here:
/discussions/board/message?board.id=imaging&thread
but i may add that MP4 with MPEG-4 (1200kbps) and ACC (at 48kHz) worked pretty well at 640x360 (25fps)...i'm testing with other codecs combination right now...

Thanks for the tip! After unsuccessfully trying Nokia Video Manager (sound but no video) and Any Video Converter (incomplete file, only the first 3 minutes of a 23 minute video) I used Format Factory and it worked perfectly!
All I can say about Nokia software is that they need to get their act together...

I am quite professional with it. Download and install format factory. Drag and drop whatever file in it, in the pop-up window that appears, select mp4 and enter the following details:
Type :mp4
Use system decode :no
Video encode :mpeg4(divx)
Video size :640x360
Bitrate :416
FPS :20
Aspect ratio :Automatic.
Leave all other fields unchanged. Press okay, then on the main window, press start. When the video conversion is over, transfer it to your 5800 xpress and play it. You now have the best configuration video in your fon which has the greatest quality:size ratio. if you like it, mail me on strangerx5@gmail.com.
