Hello:
I have a Nokia 5800 xpressmusic phone. The firmware is the latest (as of September, 2009). I have the latest version of PC Suite (7.1.30.9) on my HP laptop (Vista premium 64 bit version).
I converted a 30 minute Simpsons episode (vob file) into a mpg file using VLC Media Player (0.9.8a). I can play this mpg file in VLC media player (both audio and video). I can also play this mpg file using HP MediaSmart program that came with my laptop without any problem. Same with Windows Media Player (no problem).
When I try to play this mpg file using Nokia Video Manager in PC Suite, it plays only the video portion. There is no audio. Obviously, when I convert it and download it to my phone, I get only the video portion of the episode.
Any idea what may be wrong?
Thanks!

Supported A/V formats for the 5800 are:
Video Playback Formats: 3GPP formats (H.263), Flash Video, H.264/AVC, MPEG-4, RealVideo 7,8,9/10, WMV 9
Video Playback Frame Rate: 30 fps
Audio Formats: AAC, AAC+, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AU, AWB, eAAC+, M4A, MIDI Tones (poly 64), Mobile XMF, MP3, MP4, RealAudio 7, 8, 10, RMF, SND, SP-MIDI, True tones, WAV, WMA, WVE
Just saying that your file is an "mpg" file isn't enough information. Make sure it is encoded using one of the support formats.

Hi
I also cannot play mpeg files on my nokia 5800. I downloaded some sample audio files from the this nokia website and only the .mp3 files work. the mpeg files dont play on this phone, which is strange, you would think nokia would have make downloads available in mpeg-4 format. However they work fine on my nokia 6220. Any ideas how to fix this? Can I convert them somehow? Thanks ![]()

I'm totally confused.
You say mpeg files don't play yet at the same time Mpeg-4 and Mpeg-1 Layer 3 seem to work fine!?
MP3= Mpeg-1
AAC=Mpeg-4
MP4=Mpeg-4
3GP=Could be AMR, WB-AMR or MPEG-4
So can you be more specific?
What message do you get when you try to play them?, what format/bitrate/number of channels are these files?
Usually you can convert any audio file into another audio file. There are 1000s of audio encoders and converters out there.

Yes mp3, acc etc all work fine, I didnt realise they were mpeg files too. I dont much about the technical side of files.
When I try to transfer mpeg video clip files to my 5800 from my pc, the file explorer comes up with a message saying this file can be transported for storage only. It is not supported for use on the device itself. If possible, Use a media program that can convert the file before transfering it. Do you want to copy to the device anyway?
Then after transfering to my phone, when I click on the mpeg file to open it on my phone it says, file cannot be opened, file type not supported on this device.
Here is the link where I got them from-free sample wallpapers, ringtones and video clips from mynokia http://my.nokia.com/link?cid=PLAIN_TEXT_1178580
what format/bitrate/number of channels are these files---> The file doesnt say this, just the size which is 320kb. They are actually audio files that can be used as ringtones but are in video clip format.
As I said they play fine on my nokia 6220c, so maybe these files are old and are not supported with the nokia 5800's new software. I also tried a converter on the web and after an hour it said file convert error!
So I am giving up on these files. Other video's play fine on my 5800, which are all mp4v-es files at 2189kbit/s or 896 kbit/s. So it must be these files that are corrupt or maybe the nokia 5800 only plays video clips that are in mp4v-es format.
Thanks for your help anyway el_loco, I learnt something new from you at least!
