N8 Camera / Video Recording Problem

I have my N8 for good few months and enjoyed using it 'til recently.

'Unusual Problem Occurred' comes up on the screen every time I want to switch my camera from taking pictures to video mode, and you asked to turn the phone off and on again. Even if you won't do it, it will restart itself. All software is up to date, I did reset the phone to factory defaults and it worked for few hours and the same problem came up again. It is obviously software issue if it works from time to time.

I have exactly the same problem and it too started only a few days ago. I have been talking to the customer care team and after a couple of long conversations and useless advice on what to do, we have come to the conclusion that it is a bug in the latest software update that is preventing the camera from working correctly. 

I tried the system reset by doing *#7780# as advised, which did nothing. Some threads that I have read about other people having the same problem suggested letting the phone battery run down; this did nothing either.

Nokia then suggested that it might be because I wasn't running a memory card and there was insufficient space, so I should delete pics and movies- this just annoyed me because I had 9GB free, which if it was the case would make the phone even more ridiculous.

 

After some time and several trips to speak to the level 2 advisor, they finally concurred that it is a glitch in the latest software, which i assume you are running also; because my phone like yours had been running ok up until i installed the new updates. they said that the team are aware of the problem and are working to rectify in new update to come-no date on that and I'm not so sure i believe them. So for now we will have to sit and wait, or try and get a different phone.

there was another solution they put forward-to re-flash my phone, taking it back to its original settings and software (so my super smart phone will be running the oldest software, with the glitches the new updates were supposed to erradicate!). this would be done by my local service centre-which means i would have to send the phone away.

 

I am very annoyed that this would occur as the only reason i went against tec reports on the phone and bought it, was because of the great imaging capabilities of the phone-I wish i had gone for one of the competitors if it is not fixed soon.

I had this issue a few months ago. I was running firmware PR1.2 at the time and the only thing that solved it was to re-install that firmware. Since the reinstall, the camera has been working perfectly.

I have a different problem that I believe it could be a virus or something. Recording videos was perfect till today. Now while recording the image freezes every once in a while making the video useless. It makes like pauses... I really need help.

i had the same exact problem and i did the reset to factory defaults and it worked for a few days. I only noticed the video recorder was not working today after doing an optional update (cant remember which) but i think i'll try reinstalling the phone's software update.

@ Carlo: It's unlikely to be a virus. Have you tried reinstalling the firmware? You could also try a factory reset. If neither of those options work then your next move might be to have the phone sent for repairs. Personally I have found that the first two options usually solves most problems...

 

@ Wuese: If by "software update" you mean the firmware, then that is probably a good idea. Reinstalling the firmware works at a deeper level than a factory reset. As I said above, I have found that it usually solves any problems...

@ ejit: Have you tried the latest firmware, i.e. Symbian "Anna", or Firmware version PR2? That seems to be available for everyone now and is probably the software update that the level 2 advisors were speaking of?

 

To be honest, it seems odd that they would say it is a glitch in the firmware, because surely then everyone with that firmware blend would have the same problem also, due to the rollout of firmware to millions of people at a time OTA or via Ovi Suite etc.

 

Have you taken it to a Nokia Care Point to see if there is a hardware issue? In my opinion that is likely to be the case if software interventions haven't worked.

HI again,

 

yeah i saw that anna was out so i updated it. i loved the new look and feel to the phone and i thought that it had solved the problem, unfortunately it hasn't. it has improved slightly, working now and again, but this is not all the time. going to do as you suggest and get my service centre to repair it as a last resort. if they dont, then i'll be returning it for a new phone, which will not be a nokia!

Aah dont ditch Nokia just because of one bad experience with a phone. Every piece of technology in the world is susceptable to hardware issues (which yours appears to be). I am going through some issue with my N8 at the moment also, it is suffering from the well known shut-down-and-cant-switch-back-on-or-even-charge bug. My Nokia service centre have sent it off to be assessed for a replacement because it looks like its the processor stack that is faulty. This is a known hardware issue with some batches of the N8. The phone is under warranty, which I assume yours is too, so whatever needs to be done will be done for free and you will end up with a working phone at the end of the day...

 

I guess what Im saying is, that one bad N8 doesnt make them all bad. If you like the phone then stick with it and get it replaced like for like, its unlikely you will get another faulty one. Its just bad luck when someone does get a faulty one, but thats the way of the world!

 

Hope you get it sorted either way anyway!

an update on my problem

 

so...i sent my phone back to network to fix it. they couldnt and sent me a brand new N8. i was happy, it worked....then i did the updates and now not even the still camera works on my brand new N8! the software must be corrupting the phone. Sort it out Nokia. 2 brand new phones which have stopped working after installing your new improved software (anna). i now have to send my new one off for replacement. if the next one does the same, i will be getting a refund and switching to my usual phone make choice, SONY ERICSSON, never to return to Nokia! with their rumoured new lens and software coming in at 14mp + some time this year hopefully and dual core processors, it will not be too hard to leave the defunct N8 behind!

 

such a shame as i only bought this phone for the camera..

I have had my N8 8 months, I bought it for the camera and it was working fine until a couple of months ago. I too kept getting the error message telling me to restart the camera/phone, the video wouldn't work at all, if I re-booted the phone I might be able to take one picture if I was lucky before it locked up again. I had already upgraded to Anna.  Yesterday I decided to sort it out or send it off to a care centre, I tried installing the Beta camera fix but it made no difference, I tried taking off desktop images as suggested elsewhere in this forum. 

 

Then, this morning, eureka, just as I was about to send it off, I noticed that an app kept trying to open without being asked to, it was a Nokia Wellness Diary app from Ovi, so I deleted it and HEY PRESTO my phone and video is working perfectly for the first time for several months!  I am so happy!

 

So the moral is, if nothing else works, trying deleting your apps to see if one of them is interfering with the camera!

I eventually sent my phone back to my network and they sent me out a brand new boxed n8 with anna preinstalled. I lost all my apps and games (most unhappy) but the phone worked fine. it has been working fine now for a good few months. it has had occasional crashes but nothing major to report and camera works fine. i have wellness app installed and it does not seem to interfere with the camera and is one of my favourite apps. 

it looks like we'll never know what the problem was as there are so many different ways in which people have rectified it.

 

roll on belle- i cant wait if the hype is to be believed. anyone any information on when release will occur? all threads i can find suggest a new date of feb 2012. let's hope they release when they have ironed out compatability issues so no data or apps are lost in the conversion to belle from anna
