The memory card is of Kingston made, and it write/read & format ok in a card reader.
Is 1Gb exceeded the max limit of 6280. Or are there other problems?

There are two things that may hinder you from using your 1 GB miniSD card in your phone:
1.The 6280's current firmware doesnt support the usage of such large capacity cards, or
2.The company that provides the memory card does not support this phone.
Solutions would be to try other cards made by other company's memory products to see if the card is not compatible or try lower capacity cards like 512 MB to see if the current firmware does support these capacities. You maybe need newer firmware capable of using these cards so until then, you can only use lower sized cards.
cheers.

If that is the case, it might be that the card does not support your phone. Try other brands of cards to see if it does. Or try contacting Nokia to know what is the max limit capacity of the phone. That may help a lot.
Hope it works!
PS: Try Transcend, Sandisk, PQI and Apacer's memory cards. Most Nokia phones work with their cards...
Edit: Just saw on the Kingston website (www.kingston.com)
In the Nokia phones which they support, I did not see 6280 on the list. What I saw is 6282, a US version I think of 6280. So it seems Kingston doesnot support 6280.
Check out this site tho,

cheers.

Kingston is one of the better memory brands in the industry, so this is quite strange.
I use a 2 GB Kingston MiniSD card in my 6280, and yes, I have access to it's full capacity. No problems whatsoever.

When I tried using either of my 2 SanDisk 2GB MiniSD cards, the phone would only read them as 64MB cards, though my laptop and PDA both see them as GB cards.
I don't know what firmware version I have but I just bought the phone a week ago.
How do I find out what firmware version I have?
Also, is there a procedure to get the MiniSD card to be read properly by the phone?
I tried formatting one of the cards via the phone and now not only the phone, but the laptop and PDA all read the @GB card as a 64MB card! ;(...

So in practice, there shouldnt be any special procedures to be taken in order for a new card to be working in 6280.
if the card read/write ok in a PC reader then the problem is in your phone.
Claim warranty, while it is still new.
