The One device - open letter to Nokia community

Good day all,

I'm experiencing severe and never-ending frustrations in my digital life, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this. I'd like to share these challenges with you and I'd like to hear your views. I also think there is a solution to all of these troubles. So I wondered, hm, let's see if we can persuade Nokia to launch the solution, and become undisputed world leader in the process?!

What has been happening is that I'm experiencing cronic and severe device overload! I have a portable media player, a netbook, a work laptop, a media centre player, a car radio/music player, a satnav, a still camera, a video camera and lastly, a Nokia. All of these need their firmware flashes, software upgrades, fiddling when one upgrade breaks the connection to the next, and worst of all, it's a never-ending battle to keep my data organised! These devices all "store", "sync" or something my music, videos, contacts, data and so on, with the result that various copies of my digital life lie scattered all over my digital universe in various stages of maintenance. I haven't even joined the tablet craze yet and it's already utter madness!

This clearly has to stop! I mean, just on a practical level, I can't lug all these things around wherever I go! I can't spend all my waking hours updating, syncing and backing up my data between all these things!

The thought that keeps recurring through all of this, is that my Nokia can do all that.. It can play my music and videos on the go. It can do the browsing and trip notes I do on the netbook. It has enough processing power to do the emails, presentations, spreadsheets and documents I do on the laptop. It can play my videos and music into the home entertainment system. It has a radio and can play my music in the car, it can even do phone calls and navigate. It can take still pictures and videos. If I were able to get by with my Nokia doing all those things, I can barely imagine the bliss!

But, the one thing that still stands between my Nokia and all that, is that it doesn't - yet - have the ideal user interface for all of these applications. That's all it lacks to really BE all those things. With the right software skin and hardware suit, it could BE the centre of my home entertainment, it could BE the netbook/workstation on my desk, it could BE my car radio/media player/satnav. Since it's already a great music player, camera and video camera, it could then really BE all those separate things currently cluttering up and complicating my life. The One solution I am yearning for, and I'm sure millions of others like me?

Nokia Car Mode is an exciting step in the right direction, but I'm sure you'll agree the picture is much bigger than that. Here we have a device that can BE the big picture, all of it. The One solution, that plays my portable media, takes my pictures and videos, and now plugged into the car suit, does my car radio/media/satnav with a nice big display and all the right buttons, plugged into the home entertainment suit, plays all my music and videos in high fidelity on a large crystal-clear display with remote control, which, plugged into the desk suit does all my emails and work documents on a nice big monitor and touch-type keyboard, and even does my calls!

The only solution that I work and play with, the only solution I carry my data around with, the only solution I have to look after, The One solution I need!

The world is watching and waiting for the next big thing, and this could be it, The One big thing!

Come on Nokia, I'd love to hear what you and the other users think? You're welcome to involve me in product requirements, architecture and - especially - field trials.

Warm regards,
Francois

Re: The One device - open letter to Nokia community

Sounds like a plan but until Nokia organise themselves properly I can't see anything happening anytime soon. I don't think I'd even trust them to come up with a device that fits your profile, and get it right first time.

What might fit the bill right now would be one of those iPad or Android tab things.

Cheers.
