Why don't all applications developed for the S60 v3 platform work on all S60 v3 handsets?

I understand the hardware related differences like accelerator and touch screen, but what differences are there otherwise?

There are several different releases of S60v3, most obvious of which are the various Feature Packs. Software written specifically to take advantage of the new additions to S60v3 with FP2 (on a device such as the N78 or N96) is not going to work in a device that doesn't have FP2 like the N73 for example.

I wish software developers would classify their applications according to all these variables. One keeps loading applications to find out whether they will work on their devices or not. And all these installs and uninstalls mess up the registry of the device causing unnecessary problems.

For example www.mobile24.com shows the percentage that a specific software might run on a specific model.
