Can't install N-GAGE > update error

I have a second brandnew N96. The first had a fabric failure. A piece of plastic was blocking the speaker. So when i made a phonecall i couldn't here the "other side". On that same N96 the N-GAGE application failed to install. I tried to download it from the N96 connected with GPRS. The result was a UPDATE ERROR. I followed all the instructions on the N-GAGE website and i checked the firmware. Everything seems to go fine but in the final stage the UPDATE ERROR occurs. So i hooked it up with USB to my PC. I downloaded the application and tried to install, resulting in the same UPDATE ERROR.

I can not understand that this expensive and state of the art device is not working like it should. The manual of the TETRIS game from the box with the serial number is just kept in the box... I bought something but i can not use it.

I had to bring the first N96 back to the store. I hoped that everything would be solved with this new N96. But also this new device can not install the N-GAGE application.

Please help me out.

Thanks in advance, greetings Henk

Re: Can't install N-GAGE > update error

The N96 should have come with N-Gage installed in the firmware.

You can try to do a firmware update (latest is v11.something) via Nokia Software Updater (NSU): http://www.nokia.com/softwareupdate

You can also try just uninstalling N-Gage related things in App.mgr and then reinstall it.

When you reinstall, take the version from here:

http://www.n-gage.com/ngi/ngage/web/fi/en/get_ngage/download_n96.html

Note also N-Gage specific discussion forums here:

Re: Can't install N-GAGE > update error

Thanks for your advice... But onfortunately nothing happened, the same error occurs.

I tried the PC Suite way and the Mass storage way.

I'm just reading the TETRIS manual. The first page just says open the N-gage application and Start Game... unbelievable.

Nokia guys, just post a message somewhere that there are problems with the N96 and N-Gage. There is NO information on the N-Gage website either.

I even had to pay an extra 120 euro's for gettings this device. I switched from Sony Ericsson to Nokia but i don't think that was a wise decision. At least that device was working properly.

Re: Can't install N-GAGE > update error

I don't know what the reason is, exactly, in your case. On my N96 (still at v10 firmware, but I'll probably update soon) N-Gage works.

If you want to start from "scratch", and reset the whole situation, then...

1) Format the mass memory (and memory card, if you have one)

2) Format the phone memory ( *#7370# )

These two steps will wipe the phone clean from more or less everything (except what's in the firmware/ROM). Then continue with...

3) Copy the N-Gage *.sisx file to the mass memory from your PC. (You could install using PC Suite, but PC Suite copies it first to phone memory, etc., so I prefer this approach).

4) Launch the installation from App.mgr or the File manager on the phone.

After the installation completes, try to launch N-Gage. If it works now, whatever messed it up is now gone.

Ngage is installed in the user data area IF YOU FORMAT or RESET the phone you will delete NGAGE and may need to take the phone back.

See here:

/discussions/board/message?board.id=smartphones&thread.id=106238&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

DO you have the NGAGE icon? if you do then you don't need to re-install.

Remember to set the correct date, otherwise the games will not install.

Re: Can't install N-GAGE > update error

I'm happy that i waited to RESET the N96. I did this on the "first old" device and saw the results of a clean device. I guess your right that a lot of stuff is deleted then.

No, i have no N-GAGE icon. I only see some n-gage options in the "web" folder. But that's just for connection the n-gage site and for downloading the application.

I think that the default location for the n-gage icon should be in the applications folder is that correct?

In a new N96 NGAGE is at the Root level of the Menu.

Re: Can't install N-GAGE > update error

Does Nokia use the forum at all? Or is it just for users?

They did not respond at all at this message.

And the problem is not fixed, even after installing new firmware for the second time.

Re: Can't install N-GAGE > update error

I've got exactly the same problem, using a Vodafone Dutch N96, updated to the 11.x firmware.

No N-Gage application, and no way to install a new one. The games are present, but cannot be played.

I also have a German version of the Transformers movie pre-installed, and not the English one.

Daarna N-Gage installeren en TADAAHHH eindelijk werkt het.

Will *#7370# delete settings and data from the phone?

Re: Can't install N-GAGE > update error

Yes, i think so, but i don't know for sure.

I backupped everything before entering the code, it's a factory setting reset. Don't take the risk without a backup.

Re: Can't install N-GAGE > update error

So, making a full backup, doing the hard reset, and restoring the full backup got everything back (including settings), and the ability to install N-Gage?

Re: Can't install N-GAGE > update error

Ok, so I am seriously at wit's end right now... I have the N81 8gb, with v21.0.010, I have been struggling to update my n-gage for the past 3 days... I updated my firmware a few weeks ago, and everything was fine, I updated my n-gage without any hassles, until I decided to format my phone... BIG MISTAKE!! Anyway, now I can't seem to update my n-gage v1.10 (1349)! What happens is, I try to install v1.20 (1459), and then it gives me "update error", but when I check my application manager, it shows that I do, in fact, have v1.20 installed! I then check in the n-gage app itself, and it shows v1.10! What gives?!

I did the soft reset (*#7370#) to no avail; I did the hard reset (*- green call button - 3) to no avail as well! I have absolutely no idea what the problem is! I formatted my mass memory as well, thinking the problem lay there, but nothing! If anyone has any advice on how to sort this out, it will be much appreciated!

Re: Can't install N-GAGE > update error

An update error means that your phone has an existing version of the application you are trying to install, which in this case is NGAGE, try uninstalling it from app manager if in case you are able to see it there. If not than there is nothing much left from your side (obviously format is there as a last resort), you may try posting in nagage arena forum for more help.

Thanks

Aditya

Re: Can't install N-GAGE > update error

Lol, I've done all of the above, but I still get an update error though. Funny thing is, when I checked the version of my n-gage (in the app), it shows I have v1.20 (1459)... Oh well, I guess that's that... Thank you, though :smileyhappy:

Re: Can't install N-GAGE > update error

You can try setting the phone date back 2-3 years for the duration of the installation (in the case of an expired certificate).

Nevertheless, the N-Gage games can no longer be activated (Nokia has taken the N-Gage license/activation servers off the network sometime in March this year), and if you reformatted the phone, besides the applications, also the N-Gage game licenses are now gone.

If you made a full PC Suite backup, or a backup to the memory card, try restoring it, to get the licenses back.
