Hi There!

I currently have a Nokia E5 and wanted to find out if there is any good app to make my phone into a portable wifi hotspot?

i have downloaded joikuspot (the lite version) but it seems its not that perfect as my Galaxy Tab can't seem to find my phone. (after checking the settings, visibility, etc.)

is there any other similar app than joikuspot? or am i better off with a Nokia phone that can act on its own as a wifi hotspot?

i need help please...

Its a Symbian/Android limitation. Unrooted Androids arent able to connect to ad hoc networks like Joikuspot makes. Androids only connect to infrastructure networks similar to the ones they create. The only way to make an Android connect to an adhoc network is to root it and push some codes into it. iPads can connect to ad hoc networks though

My Galaxy Tab is an unrooted one and the OS in an upgraded 2.3 Gingerbread now. so, am i correct in saying:

1. get an iPad instead of a Galaxy Tab?

or

2. just get  another phone (a Nokia or Android) that will act as a wifi hotspot and not "depend" too much on an app?

and

3. no point in downloading Joikuspot Premium?

what do you think guys? any further advice please.

1. If you would have no issues regarding using an iPad, I wouldnt see why not.

2. Nokia phones cannot create infrastructure networks, the same way Androids cannot make ad hoc networks (AFAIK), so if you would instead get another device, some operators now offer mobile hotspot devices that can accomodate 5 devices and has a battery life of about 7 hrs. You just need to insert a internet capable SIM. You could remove the data plan from your personal SIM and get a data only SIM for this and use its WiFi. The reason why i'm trying to avoid purchasing a portable wifi (or mifi as some operators might call it) is because it cost money.

If a phone has an app or is capable ON ITS OWN being a portable wifi hostpsot then why not.

is there any way i can change settings in my Nokia E5 to make it look like as NOT an adhoc network? or perhaps changing the settings on my Galaxy Tab?

or what do you think is the best solution or options do i have right now?

You cant change the E5 as it is an OS limitation. Symbian itself prevents this. You can do something about your Galaxy Tab, but it requires rooting.

So basically, you can either get an iPad instead for your Gtab, or root your Gtab to install a few things. For rooting your Gtab, you'd have to head to the XDA developer's site.

I thought the E6 can act "on its own" as a wifi hotspot without the use of an app. is this true?

and if its the case will it be as an ad-hoc or will my Gtab "see" it as an adhoc?

please explain and advice further.

No it still will be adhoc. It doesnt matter what app you use. Symbian itself can only support the creation of ad hoc networks. Its impossible to create an infrastructure hotspot on any Symbian phone using any app. The only way to do so will be to rewrite Symbian itself, and it would also probably require changing hardware (WiFi antenna) as well. Other devices like PCs, Macs, and iOS run devices would connect to a Symbian hotspot. Androids can only do so with rooting. Its a problem on Androids, since everything else can connect except them.

So in otherwords, your only choices are:

1. get a new phone thats not Symbian/Nokia
2. root your Gtab
3. replace your Gtab with an iPad/Windows tablet

Just last question although i'm not sure if you guys would be able to answer this.

I'm just curious....why does iOS devices find it so easy to connect to an adhoc network? i thought theirs is a "close" network unlike Android or Symbian.

iOS is not a closed network. Its a closed ecosystem. iOS ecosystem is built around apps and programs which Apple controls. Basically, Apple controls what apps can be loaded and made for iOS via their approvals on what is able to go onto the AppStore. Basically, all iphones look and function the same way and have the same specs (per version).

Symbian and Android's "open" ecosystem on the other hand allows more customization, as each Droid and Symbian can look, function, feel different from each other, apart from having different specifications. This is why you can see a high end droid with dual core procs, and low end droids with slow procs, because the manufacturers are allowed to make changes to the base OS to accomodate these driver/hardware changes, etc. Basically, if you know enough, you can get vanilla Android and make your own version of it.

Connecting to adhoc networks is simply a matter of having the correct programming in the system to be able to recognize the network. Which is why rooting an Android device and adding the necessary files would allow you to connect to adhoc networks. Its simply a fact that Google did not add the files to vanilla Android and manufacturers chose not to tinker with it.

So, would you think future Symbian and Android OS-eses would allow adhoc connections?

and do you think one day we will be experiencing cross-platform stuff i.e. iOS features "copied" or based from Android and Symbian and vice versa. (like what people are saying about iOS5).

Its all up to Android. Android is the only one that doesnt have it. Furthermore, nothing is based of whatever. They are simply putting in more functionality in order to be competitive. Symbian I doubt would add more to this regard as it doesnt need it. Of course why would Nokia add something that would only encourage people to buy Android devices with them partnering with MS, its not unlikely for us to see a Nokia Win8 tablet. They'd want you to buy that instead of a Droid.

I also noticed that after downloading the Joikuspot Premium edition i noticed that iPod Touch "disconnects" from the (adhoc) network for some mysterious reason and "switches" to my home wifi network if aim at home. this happened al the time when i put my idevice on standby.

Is this phenomenom to blame the app? or my Nokia phone? or my iPod Touch?

any explanation for this?
