Vista

Hi, are there an compatible nokia suites for my Nokia 8800 that work with Microsoft Vista. I have no problem at work with XP home using bluetooth but can't get it to work at home on my new laptop with vista home premium. So much for advancements in technology!!!!!!!!!

Re: Vista

I could swear that i have seen posts saying that people have 6.82 working on Vista.

But this sort of thing is why i have not rushed out and got Vista, it usually takes 6 months for products to get caught up with new OS's. Nokia is actually doing quite well getting a product released a couple of months after the release of the new OS. i would just be patient if i were you and wait for the new version to be released for public download

I think you will find that most companies do a closed beta test first. Atleast you know Nokia is working on a compatible version of PC Suite.

When an operating system first comes out there is always a delay in compatibility with other applications.

It is commericially worng to keep your beta out this long after release of a dominating OS. Name it an alpha programm a beta, who cares. Why isn't Nokia valueing to informing their consumers know they are working on it, share their information and view on the new OS.

Did you find out as well that the word Vista is not even once mentioned on any Nokia site worldwide, with the exeption of these discussion pages. I suggest to dedicate at least one page to the issue and appologize for the increasing delay in this matter.

As an consumer I preceive it as an defect in the consumption of my Nokia phone not being able to use the features I appreciate most. Features which differentiate this phone from any other. I did not just intend to consume any phone, I payed a premium for this Nokia phone. Is it appropriate to ask why it takes these months to come up with a workable solution?

Re: Vista

You do realise that this is free software and not something you purchase. You buy your phone, the PC Suite is a free gift that you can use with it.

Also Nokia is clearly working on a solution. Stamping your feet is not going to make them work faster.

Just ask the people with an ipod :smileyhappy:

Re: Vista

PC Suite 6.82 installs fine on Vista. You might have to turn off UAC

UAC? User Account Control? switch it off, you mean no password on the user?

Re: Vista

Yes, 6.82 installed fine on my laptop with Vista (Business) as well. Connecting my N70 with the USB cable also worked OK. But I cannot get connectivity via Bluetooth. It complains about the absence of a Toshiba (?) driver, so I downloaded the Toshiba Vista compiant driver from the Tohiba website, but no joy. I have a Sony Vaio SZ laptop so the Toshiba bit came a bit as a surprise. Cable is OK I guess, but Bluetooth would be much better as I then don't have to worry about forgetting the cable.
Anyone else experience with this? Otherwise I guess the only option is to wait for the Vista compliant version of PC Connect which reportedly is under beta testing.

Re: Vista

No, it doesn't mean you have to remove your password. UAC is the thing that pops up when you try to do something important such as install a programme, or make system changes.

To ensure installation of PC Suite or NSU you should run these with administrator privileges.

I have both working (most of the time) on Vista Ultimate.

Re: Vista

I've just installed PC Suite 6.81.13.0 (the version included with my N93) on a Lenovo X60t Tablet PC with no issues. The installer ran fine (I did have to click OK in UAC but no issues), the Bluetooth connection established itself with no problem and I was able to perform a full backup of the phone. I'm currently backing up the memory card (2GB and lots of images) which looks like it will take a while.

I'll come back and follow up with additional info as my exploration continues but it does not appear we're talking about complete incompatibility (assuming you have an installation CD with this version of PC Suite) I have been completely unable to access a newer version but I understand the issues involved with revising an application to meet a new OS and Vista presents a big challenge for developers due to the way it handles driver signing, connectivity, and synchronization. I don't know if the developers at Nokia are trying to leverage Vista's new Mobility Center (that would be very cool) but if they are, that may be contributing to the delay in releasing a new version.

Hope this helps a bit.

Re: Vista

Is yours a Vista installation?
When I try to connect using Bluetooth (using the connection wizard), I get an error box "Cannot use the conection type. Check that all the needed hardware, software and drivers are available"

The bluetooth on my N70 as well as the Sony Vaio SX laptop are switched on. I have downloaded the Toshiba driver for Vista (earlier, it was loooking for / trying to install a Toshiba driver, so I found, downloaded and installed one).
When I enter 'Manage connections' in PC suite, the checkbox for "bluetooth (Toshiba) is unchecked (the Bluetooth (Microsoft is checked). when I try to check the box, get the same message as above.

Any idea?

Re: Vista

Sorry - should have been more specific . Yes - I'm running Vista Business on the Lenovo X60 and everything just worked the first time I tried it.

Many PC OEMs use the Toshiba BT stack BTW. It sounds like you may have two Bluetooth managers (Toshiba and Microsoft) competing for resources and canceling each other out. What does the Device Manager show for your Bluetooth device? Does it indicate a conflict or does it report "This device is working properly"?

If an error is indicated, you might try removing the device, rebooting, opening the Device Manager, and having it scan for hardware changes to reinstall the drivers.

That works for me sometimes when I have a balky device but there's no guarantee. I'm currently wrestling with a driver for the Trackpoint mouse stick on the Lenovo that's still having driver issues. There is a new driver available from Lenovo but it fails to install properly (thankfully the device itself still works). I've reported it ot Lenovo and they have acknowledged that they can reproduce the issue and are looking into it.

I'm assuming you have looked on the Sony site for updated Vista drivers for your Vaio, Do not rely exclusively on Windows Update - it often takes a while for new drivers to show up there.

Re: Vista

Guys i googled and found an answer to our problems and it WORKS!!!

1) Disable UAC
Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Turn UAC on or off (last option)

2)open command prompt and enter this without quotes

"msiexec /i [path].msi"

eg msiexec/i c:\NokiaPCS.msi"

P.S. The user must be an administrator

Re: Vista

That makes sense - there are a few applications I've encountered that only work if they're installed with UAC off. Remember, yo have to reboot after turning it off and again after turning it back on.

Re: Vista

I go with sosul's comments. He is wright. And Nokia PC Suite is a free software from Nokia. They want to no more problems for their customer when they post it in public. So they r taking their time which is reasonable.

Re: Vista

milothomas,
yes, I also disabled UAC. That helped.
But can you be a bit more specific of what the path actually points at? what file is it? how did you locate it?
What efefct did it have? Installing Nokia PC suite or getting the bluetooth stack to work?

Re: Vista

Milo:

The command line argument he provided is for installing Nokia PC Suite. It has nothing to do with the Bluetooth issue.

The argument simply points the MS Installer utility at the PC Suite download and tells it to execute an installation. Not sure that is necessary after turning UAC off. Double-clicking the .exe file should be sufficient.

Re: Vista

Sometimes is not enough to turn OFF UAC, you should do the following:

1. Open Start Menu, Run:
2. enter secpol.msc
3. say "yes" "continue" or what ever.
4. Find on your left pane: Security Options under Local Policies.
5. Disable: User Account Control: Detect application installations and prompt for elevation.
6. Disable: User Account Control: Run All Administrators in Admin Approval Mode.
7. Now, if you PC is part of a network be sure to add your network users to the admin group of users.
8. Restart.
9. Install PC Suite.

Works for me with Vista Enterprise.

Re: Vista

You should also download the latest version of PC Suite (6.82.27) to solve any other problems you might encounter..
