THERE IS NO SOLUTION!
I tried everything anybody ever said in this forum about MTP driver.
I have nokia 5800xm, I tried to update to v.50.0.005 firmware on windows 7, with OVI - failed, with pc suite - failed,
I can synchronise addressbook, copy music, use it in data transfer mode, but cant update.
Formating card, deleting folder /private/10208913, reinstalling ovi, reinstalling pc suite, taking out card, reseting phone to factory settings, tried on XP sp3, installing - uninstalling winmedia player 10, 11 ... nothing helped.
I also tried to find support email of nokia - failed.

If you are having this problem, please check whether taking out the memory card and connecting back in PC Suite lets it connect, if it does, then the following solution should work for you:
backing up memory card in mass storage mode
format memory card
copying everything back
doesnt make much sense to me, but it worked for me when nothing else did

I had this same problem with the second 5800 I had (the first one reacted badly to a little water!) It was not a problem with the first..
When I had the issue I had a 16 gig card in it, and that card contained data from my first 5800 . I tried replacing it with the blank 8gig card and it worked- for a while. As soon as I popped the16 gig back in it failed again.
I then quick formatted the 16 gig out of the phone (having ensured all data was saved elsewhere).
The reformatting seems to have done the trick, I've just been able to use Nokia suite, with the 16 gig card in the new phone, to sync everything.
(Any offers for a damp 5800 ;-) )
I'm using Windows 7 .

Have you tried to install the free Nokia PC Suite?
I've solved with that.

The last post was unreadable, so another try:
I have the Nokia 5800 with the same MTP problems on Windows XP. When connecting via USB the general MTP driver is loaded, originating from the Windows Media Player 11 installation.
This happens, because windows doesn't know the Nokia driver is compatible with your hardware (I think this must be an error in the .inf file from Nokia)
The following procedure works for me on XP to install the correct driver:
- Open device manager
- Connect your phone
- Find the MTP driver under Portable Devices which is refreshing all the time
- Choose Update Driver
- Do NOT search for software, press next
- Choose Install from a list or specific location
- Don't search, choose your own driver
- Next you will see the Microsoft drivers MTP Device Version 5.nnnn or 6.nnnn
- Uncheck Show compatible hardware and select Nokia as manufacturer
- Now you will have one or more Nokia Windows Portable Device Drivers version 7.nnnn
- Choose the highest version (in my case 7.0.55.0)
- You get a warning that this driver is not recommended, just continue
- After installing this driver, your device will be displayed in Device Manager as Nokia Windows Portable Device Driver
You're done now.
If synchronization doesn't start, just delete the folder "10208913" in the private directory on the SD card, as described elsewhere in this forum.

This worked for me on Windows 7 x86(32)
First I tried with registry modify to 0 and didn't work then I connect in mass storage mod. Windows told me there is an error on device and I started the Error checking program from windows , scanned for about 2 mins repaired some errors then device worked just wine and I was able to install and use mtp .

Whatever I do it just simply doesn't work, doesn't anyone have a solution for this?
I tried updates MTP but, apart from searching, I have no clue how to install it, considering I don't have it stored anywhere. Does anyone know when I can download a MTP Driver that actually work?
But at the moment the computer almost doesn't even recognize the phone, I can use it just fine with Bluetooth, but I can't seem to find any way for it to work with the provided USB cable, this is just beyond bad. Can't believe it's been so long and Nokia still hasn't give anyone a solution.
