Hi - have an N96 and trying to sync with PC. Have latest version of PC suite software (downloaded yesterday) and running Vista 64, all up to date.
When I connect my phone, the handset pops up options to connect and I select 'pc suite mode'.
But the pc suite says the phone is connected in a non-compatible mode (file transfer mode) so won't work.
It's driving me mad... any ideas??

Hmmm. In desperation I tried to sync with my netbook (running xp) and it worked first time.
So clearly the problem lies with software... PC suite claims it works with vista but perhaps nokia haven't worked out all the wrinkles...maybe 3bit Vista is fine but 64bit isn't... anyway I don't like 'work-arounds' but it'll do for now...!

Hi,
Goto Nokia N96's Menu > Tools > Connectivity > USB >
(i) USB Connection mode => Select PC Suite
(ii) Ask on connection => Yes
Make sure that USB connection is in PC suite mode, if you want to connect your device with PC Suite ![]()

Problem solved....
It appears that the Nokia installer does NOT update the cable drivers correctly.
1) Un-install the current cable drivers from your computer
2) Download the current usb cable drivers from Nokia http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/d
(This link is current for 16th July 2009)
3) Then install
Your computer should now see your phone in PC Suite mode
Hope this helps everyone

versions 6.x and up already contains updated cable drivers.
though I have just bought N86 and cannot get it to sync with my Outlook 2003. Nokia PC Suite works fine, connects, reads messages and all other stuff, but the Syncronisation tool does not run at all. Any ideas?
Windows XP SP3
PC Suite 7.1.30.9
Connected by USB cable

..so I should un-install the Connectivity Cable Driver, and then install the new driver?
@krampis: This seems to be a Vista only problem.

Got to sync N86 to Outlook. Great! Now phone looks usable ![]()
Probably some XP issue, as I did sync on my other computer.
PS any suggestions for good application download sites (free soft)?

I was having the exact same problems and from what i can work out its a software problem.
At 1st it didn't work at all even if the phone was in pc suite mode, tried everything installing, uninstalling, getting new drivers nothing.
After about a week i said screw it and formatted my pc, installed the CD that came with the phone lugged it in and worked fine.
So if worst comes to worst just format you pc and should work
hope this helps as i know its a night mare after buying such an expensive phone.

Same problem here with a new 1661 phone. PC Suite does not see the phone.
I tried the cable driver install suggested above, with no luck.
Just plugging in the phone, without PC Suite, causes WindowsXP to go into the "found new hardware" wizard, which ends with it being unable to find a dirver to install.
If no fix this weekend, the phone goes back on Monday. No way am I manually entering 200 contacts!
(Not to mention the "user Manual" being the worst that I've ever seen!)

Hi ryuken,
You can check the following on your phone.
Menu > Settings > Connecitivity > USB. You have following options
USB COnnection mode :
PC SUite
Mass Storage
Image Transfer
Media Transfer
Please do check if your phone option was selected as Mass storage, if yes, then change it to PC Suite.
Also,
Ask on Connection
Yes
No
If you want your phone to ask always whenver you connect your device using USB(to change mode from one to other say PC Suite to Mass Storage), Select option as Yes.
Hope its clear

I have similar problem with my N97 V21. I have laptop with XP and when I sometimes want to connect my phone to PC via USB cable my comp doesn't do anything... In my phone in connection settings I see just that the USB connection is connect in PC Suite mode, but I can' see my phone in PC.. But if I let mobile connected to PC and restart phone, it start to charge and after then I can see the phone in PC.. I'm in desperate :-(.. And sometimes my phone tell me "system error" and I don't know what is it... And sometimes nobody can call me and phone behaves like out of signal or so on.. I like nokia phones, but this new one makes me crazy..
