Nokia and Mac syncing with iSync WHEN?

Since some posters on these fora are quite strict in their thinking about thread content - I propose this thread:

Nokia and Mac syncing with iSync WHEN?

Have you purchased or otherwise acquired a Nokia phone,  any model?

Are you a Mac user or pc switcher?

Do you believe that two giant companies like Nokia and Apple ought to be able to accommodate their customers needs for syncing all types of data in a logical fashion from phone to computer and back again?

OR

Are you willing to support third parties with more of your hard-earned cash because they sometime fill the software gaps left in the consumer cycle of electronic tools and gadgets?

OR

Have you given up and realize that you spent money on products that do not cooperate in saving your time and benefiting your organization?

Then please comment on this thread  - and let's see what problems surface for Mac users of Nokia phones.

Please let us know the Nokia model that is not performing to your needs and your Mac operating system.

{(Pretty much that ought to be Mac OS X (10.3, 10.4, 10.5) since, really if you are still on OS 9 we can't hold much hope for your problem ever, *ever* being resolved. Really.)} A Nokia model ref. list follows.

If anyone reps Nokia here >> please reply to the problems that surface>> let us know which thread we can find answers in.  We'll click on over, read your linked thread, get our super-bad Nokias syncing to our fab Macs and we'll go away til we buy another Nokia.

OR

We'll see that no one from Nokia responds/ gives a damn and we'll go get ourselves nice little hunks of other electronic junk like G1s, iPhones, Sony whatevers....

NB: If you've been looking for answers any where on these fora by now you may know that you can span the Nokia/Mac gap by throwing more money at it and supporting third parties - like Nova Media  - [Note to any supporters/testers/proselytizers of NM products you can save the adverts in any replies  - I covered your ubiquitous blurbs in the body of this thread.]  Bottom line- NM stuff works. But really?  More $$$$?

All the Nokia models I could find/think of follow - some sync, some don't - but I wanted everyone who might need to  - to be able to find this thread.  Humor me and your fellow NokMac-users POST your problem here...

Re: Nokia and Mac syncing with iSync WHEN?

This is a good thread but the title is misleading a bit. Nokia and Macs do sync. Not all but most sync quite well. I will also make an attempt to put things more into prospective from my point of view.

1. Nokia is the one to be held to the fire. Not Apple. Apple does not make iSync plugins. Nokia does. The fault lies with Nokia first and foremost.

2. As Nokia is usually late in supplying plugins, 3rd party guys step up and fill in the void. We can be grateful for this. I would rather us a free Nokia plugin, but if I have the choice to pay €10 and get lifetime support with a purchased plugin, I will go this route as I also know that the work behind the plugin is guaranteed.

3. If you have given up and realized that you misspent your money, chances are you would not be in this forum and on this thread.

4. Nokia reps, outside of the mods, do not come to this forum to read or comment. You are encouraged to use the. "Contact Us" link on the top right to forward your concerns to Nokia.

5. In the near future, it is likely that Nokia will no longer support Mac OS X 10.4.x as the new NMT supports new features in 10.5.x and 10.6 (yes NMT works in Snow Leopard as I have tried it) not supported in 10.4.x.

In short, Nokia is dropping the ball, but these iSync plugins are just another way for them to fail. You can add customer support, product design, corporate in-fighting, etc.... Nokia should not have released the Flagship N97 without having all logistical support in place. This is a massive fail as far as I am concerned. With that being said, the N97 is the tipping point.

Re: Nokia and Mac syncing with iSync WHEN?

Can't wait to express contempt for us resisters to the upgrade pork barrel. Do one thing! My 5310 could talk to my Mac Book blue tooth, a little water damage and a new 2760 and I'm persona non grata.

I'm aware of subtle differences, but really! You say blue tooth, you say file transfer, most programs Can run on this mac even if they were written for a PC. You don't mind taking the money, I know it's not the code that's holding you out, you want a third party kick back!

That will be the day, consider me hostile.

Re: Nokia and Mac syncing with iSync WHEN?

Hi

I've just purchased a 6700 Classic and can't get iSync to do anything with it, has any one got any ideas on syncing this phone with a Mac running OSX 10.4 or 10.5

Cheers

Re: Nokia and Mac syncing with iSync WHEN?

Still no N97 plugin, 2 months after.

In contrast, the N86 8MP had one upon release.

More worrisome is that while you could easily hack together your own iSync plugin for other phones (incl. the 5800 XM) using other plugins as base, this seems not to be the case with the N97.  Something happened in firmware of this phone to make SyncML not quite the same as in other phones.   There are rumors, even, that there will never be an iSync plugin for the N97 for this reason.

So, I'm dumping mine on the open market (as soon as it comes back from repair, thanks to a camera failure.. another story).  The iSync plugin is but one of many other issues (GPS performance, camera performance, lack of universal copy/paste, lack of specific accented characters such as ø/Ø, å/Å, and literally hundreds of annoying "almost there, but too buggy" features throughout).

Embarrasingly enough (for Nokia), I found that the SE C905a - a "dumphone" - surpasses the N97 in a lot of areas that traditionally Nokia did well in: Camera, E-Mail (incl. Exchange), GPS, WiFi (you can even browse the phone's filesystem over the network), etc. etc --- and: iSync.

Re: Nokia and Mac syncing with iSync WHEN?

5800 syncs with isync (calendar + contacts). it is a rather basic function, though. for files, just plug in USB in mass storage.

tbh i'm more annoyed that mac owners cannot update branded nokia OTA. you have to go in the NCP (free while in warranty). the nokia phone support page says use PC updater!

If you are comparing the N97 and the 5800XM in terms of the ability to sync data, you are in correct. The N97 is diffferent than the 5800XM internally which is why there is no plugin for it already. Nokia has broken the firmware and no developer can create a plugin so as it stands the N97 is not the device for the Mac community. I took mine back and purchased an iPhone.

Re: Nokia and Mac syncing with iSync WHEN?

I'm a Mac and Nokia user, and I'm waiting for Nokia to release an iSync plugin for my Nokia 5130 ExpressMusic. This is a relatively new phone, released this year. But it is time already for Nokia to release a plugin for it. I agree with another commenter here, that said it is Nokia's responsibility to make such a plugin, since it is the phone's manufactor. Apple can't be held responsible for all phones support.

So here goes my claim for Nokia: When are you releasing a plugin for 5130 ExpressMusic?

Re: Nokia and Mac syncing with iSync WHEN?

as a side note there is a nokia media software that can sync your itunes, it creates a new playlist folder in itunes for you & you can set it to encode music to a more phone friendly format. not protected tracks, though if it encodes from itunes it should encode from ALAC also, which is handy.

How can I sync my Nokia 6500 slide with my powerbook pro 2.4 Ghz Intel Core duo 10.5.8

I find it totally unacceptable that they don't naturally blend on isync... I am thinking to buy the new iphone!

Let's be realistic, Apple has an unfair advantage when it comes to iPhone integration, they made the computer, they wrote the operating system and made the phone, it would a totally stupid if they didn't work together.

Nokia isn't the only one that lags behind in their Mac support, there are huge loads of mobile phones that don't properly sync with MacOS without third-party solutions, that includes leading manufacturers like RIM (Blackberry).

It is even worse if you start going into brands like Samsung or LG.

This will probably not improve until the Mac's market share increases significantly and then we'll get more apps and support and unfortunately probably more viruses as well.

So Nokia should get a pass. History lesson for you. Back in the day, Nokia and Apple supported each other but went their separate ways so there is a pre-established history between the two companies. Nokia, not Apple, is responsible for the lack of support. Second, the firmware in the N97 is so broken 3rd party developers cannot develop the necessary plugins needed for the syncing of data. Another Nokia fail. So continue apologetics for Nokia's lack of professionalism will solver their lack of professionalism.

Re: Nokia and Mac syncing with iSync WHEN?

Yes we need iSync but we also ned a more reliable Nokia media transfer, My install does not transcode AAC tracks properly, or at all, and also "identifies" the odd track as DRM protected that has been encoded by iTunes from CD, I mean the odd track on a CD where the others have been succesfully transferred!

I unfortunately own an N97 on Vodafone UK

Re: Nokia and Mac syncing with iSync WHEN?

I just bought a Nokia 6750 Mural (it appears as 6750-1b over bluetooth).

The forum site is fine and well at: http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/6750_Mural

The marketing site is fine and well at: http://www.nokiausa.com/find-products/phones/nokia-mural-6750

Would it really be that hard to also have an isync plugin ?

I used to enjoy the synchronization with my 6102i ; that was the main reason for buying another Nokia phone.

Thanks.

PS: my email exchanges with the customer support have so far not been helpful in finding a resolution for this problem. (besides the obvious: dump my nokia phone and get something else)

Re: Nokia and Mac syncing with iSync WHEN?

It looks to me that all the other 3rd party developers' stuff is based on Bluetooth. I've been test-driving software from www.syncfony.com which does all the data backup OTA (over-the-air). And I think they support the Mural and N97 - thanks to not having to rely on bluetooth especially with the N97.

Re: Nokia and Mac syncing with iSync WHEN?

i dont understand why we should be forced into syncing via Apple's iSync that first came out in 2003 as mobile sync plug-in platform. I dont think Apple's approach to backing up contacts, calendar items with iSync onto the Macs has been successful in any shape or form during the last 6-7 years.

The underlying reasons behind the iSync problems appear to be due to Nokia but really they are due to Apple. Nokia has to build a new plug-in every time it comes with a new phone and these plugins are based on a platform controlled by Apple!!!!!!     Especially after the success of the iPhone, Apple has no motivation to making their iSync Bluetooth library very functional for other mobile device developers - definitely not for Nokia. (the number 1 smartphone company they want to steal thunder from)

Let's really play the blaming right here. We should be making these complains in Apple boards about iSync. It's Apple's fault if it's any big company's fault!!

I'm a vodafone subscriber in England and fortunately the uplink speed is good compared to what I get in New York with my data network.

Why should I NOT use my data network for backing up, syncing my 1500 or so contacts in my Nokia's phonebook with the Address Book? Especially given that I'm in England for most of the time......

Re: Nokia and Mac syncing with iSync WHEN?

Follow-up on the Nokia 6750 Mural: I created a plugin, with iSync plugin maker.

I have OSX 10.5.8 ; iSync 3.0.2.

The plugin is available at http://www.mediafire.com/?lmfxjti5fgi

To Nokia support: a BIG ZERO. I'll remember that next time I buy a phone.

The plugin supports synchronization of:

- events: works fine except for "all-day events", where there are some problems with the alarms

This is where, for instance, some help from Nokia would be *useful*.

- phone book: works fine

- no tasks synchronization: I do not use this feature

The plugin has worked fine for me for a few days now. Use at your own risk.
