Hi everyone,

I have a Nokia 6230 phone and have connected the phone to my PC successfully using Bluetooth.

I can use all the functionality of the PC suite except the SMS side. When I click Messages I get the message "Nokia Phone Browser -Failed to start update."

I have the latest Nokia software 6.70.22. I removed the software, restarted, reinstalled and the problem still exists. I have deleted the Bluetooth pairing, paired the phone back up, under a different name as well and the problem is still there.

I am using Windows XP Pro, SP2 with the Microsoft Bluetooth stack (Widicom drivers).

Will this help?:
This worked for me: go to Start -> Run and enter

Regsvr32.exe %Windir%\System32\Ole32.dll

Click OK and the "phone browser" works again!

(post by MarcelloRossi has helped many with this type of propblem)

Thank you Manta for your post.

Unfortunately it did not work, even after several attempts and restarts. I check the computer event log and nothing showed as error. Same message Failed to start Update when attempting to view SMS messages, everything else works without a problem.

My phone software version is V04.28 dated 24/06/2004, Nokia 6230 (RH-12).

Tried the fix suggested by Manta but still not working.
My 6230 has a firmware v05.24 25-11-04

I have the same issue with a 7250i. Other function work, just not the message management. This part of the software works with my other phone (6101).

Does anyone know, is this issue caused by the suite software, or a generic problem with the phone, or a problem with just my handset, or ....?

Hi guys, when you installed PC Suite, did you have any anti-virus or firewall software running at the time? If so, try uninstalling PC Suite and reinstalling it with AV and FW software disabled.

**MAKE SURE you're not connected to the Internet though when you disable your AV and FW software and remember to enable it again before connecting to the Internet again after the installation.

I have tried stopping AV etc. as requested and it did not work. I do not have any firewalls running on my PC so there was no need for me to look at area - I am protected by our company firewall.

I realise this might not go down too well on a Nokia forum (but hey, Nokia could always improve their software!).....

I gave up with PC suite and use Oxygen Phone Manager II program instead. You can gave a free trial, but in the trial the SMS managemenbt seems to be fully fuinctional.

It's better than PC Suite in that it can actually read the SMS messages friom my 7250i!

I am not in a position to buy additional software.

The Nokia software, when working, works very nicely.

Come on Nokia please come up with a fix for this, I am not alone on this issue !!!!

Hmmm it may be a terrible piece of software but if it works and PC Suite does not what then?

PC Suite is a difficult software to install or update. There are thousands of messages about the difficulty of installing updates and now hundreds about version 6.7 not reading messages. The latter is a critical function. What use is it if synchronisation working but you cannot read the results?

So some help from Nokia and less complacency from the fortunate few who can get it to work would be welcome!

i dont think it is actually a fortunate few that can use it. if it were a major problem then you would see a lot more messages about it here.

if re-registering ole32.dll did not work you may want to totally remove nokia pc suite. there is an application called pc suite cleaner that will do this for you. if the problem still persists, you may want to call nokia.

dont forget, this isnt a way of contacting nokia here - its for users to get help from other users.

May be many Nokia users are not club members?

A full Google search on "Failed to Start Update PC Suite" hit over 1.5 million posts! So possibly it is problem of wider interest then you thought!

I have submited a request to Nokia for help on the subject sometime ago and failed to get a reply which is why I posted here.

1.5 million is nothing compared to the amount of nokia phones out there.

so you have tried re-registering the ole32.dll and this did not work?

what firmware is on the phone?

The number of Nokia active phones able to use the PC Suite 6.7.22 software is estmated at 15 million, so the worry posts are signifacant!

Yes the re-registration succeeded but the error in reading messages persisted.

I have the original firmware (4.55 I think) and have been advised that unless i want to connect to Blackberry not to upgrade to 5.22 as it has substantial rpoblems at least her in UK.

are you using a 6230 at all? from your comments it looks like you may be using a 9500 or 9300 communicator.

if you are using a 6230, I would advise getting the firmware updated. dont worry about blackberry, the 6230 doesnt support it.

if you are using a communicator, the latest firmware fixes a lot of issues, i would also recomend you get this

I am using a Nokia 6230 and nothing else.

Where do I find the PC suite clean up tool? I know from great experience that uninstall programs themselves are not the cleanest when removing Registry entries.

you can pc suite cleaner here: http://europe.nokia.com/nokia/0,8764,84592,00.html. it is actually quite good compared to the previous version.

if the firmware is an issue, you could get that updated to the lastest.
