Hi there. I have a 3500, 3720, and 6300. My issue seems to be with all these phones.
I use international phone cards a lot. You have to dial a normal landline number, then manually enter your pin, then manually enter your number. This can be a real nuisance, as you have to have your pin number at hand, and have written down the phone number you want to dial.
If i try to access my phonebook, and dial the number from there, the screen automatically closes the phonebook, and enters the number i have dialled - ie, it thinks i am about to make a call. So I either have to memorise the number and then dial, or write it down.
Is there anyway nokia phones can tone dial the existing number in my phone book, whilst I am on a call? This way i could store my pin number too, and wouldn't have to manually enter it each time.

I had the same problem and never found a way to make the phone dial from contacts when on a call.
However, for what it is worth, this is what I ended up doing.
I add the the normal landline number for the phone card and the pin to the contact number I want to ring, inserting pauses between them
Example.
Contact number: 00 353 1 123456
Int phone card acces number: 888888
Pin: 5555
The number I enter for that contact is 8888p5555p003531123456
You insert a "p" into the number to pause dialling by pressing the "*" key 3 times.
Sometimes you may have to insert more than one pause to extend the pause.

thanks!.. that's a step there.
do you now what the 'w' means when you press the star key, btw?

The use I aware of for the "w" is when entering unlock codes for the phone. See the link below.
