I have a n96, 3120 classic, a sony ericsson c902.
i'm very concerned abt the fact that my mobile should not get SCRATCHES on it. the feeling of having a new phone and then one day a scratch coming on it for no fault of your own, AWFUL!

what should be done to protect the phone from getting scratches?

What I do is whenever I put my phone in my pocket I make sure that nothing sharp like coins or keys are in the same pocket.

Other things I do is never put it face down on a rough surface.

I keep my N96 inside a pouch (Nokia CP-265) most of the time.

Other things you could do is apply a screen protector or use a case that protects all of the phone

I do not like the extra caution things like the black bulky covers etc. What I do everytime is to look after the phone carefully.
My s-e-x-y N79 however, makes me tempted to buy a crystal case for it.

I hate crystal cases, they also make phones look cheap and bulky.

I quite liked the Clear Protector I got for my N95-2. It is like a screen saver except it covers the whole phone. Unfortunately it is not available for the N96.

crystal plastic cases are useless. I bought one for my old 6288 and within two weeks it had broken, i had just left it on the phone hadn't subjected the phone to stress or anything except putting it in my pocket. useless i say

They sure do, i put an OEM warm graphite back cover on my old N95-1 then put on the crystal case and it scratched my brand new cover.

With that happening i never used the case again, and had to get another back cover as i like my phones to look perfect.

I rotate between three different pouches - the original Nokia suede drawstring bag I bought with the phone, occassionally a less bulky Velcro-closure bag I heve sewn myself out of a piece of denim, and a cheap (but leather!) no-name pouch bought from an open-air market, which can be worn on my belt. Usually the Nokia bag wins.

Hi tobbykhan,

Changing of casing should only be carried out by a Nokia Care Centre to avoid invalidating your warranty. Surely you are not planning on changing your casing already? Your phone is brand new.

i dont want to change my casing, but i fear the scratches, thats why i'm thinking of changing the casing. do you think it would be a good idea?

and should i buy the casing first and then give to nokia? or will they replace it with their own casing??

I have only ever replaced casings on phones with pop casing such as the 6230i.

I figure that it is alright to have a few scratches if you have had the phone a few months. I am very careful with my phones and they tend to be in pretty good condition after 1 year. If you are careful with yours there is no reason why it wouldn't be the same.

With regards to changing casings every time you get a scratch, you will be forever changing casings. I personally would only consider it if I drop the phone and there is a major scratch.

I don;t think the Nokia Care Centre will fit a case you give them. They will probably insist on supplying the case as well. However, you can always ask them.

As mentioned lots of ways to look after your phone, the bottom line is to use COMMON SENSE.

Here is my tip for SCREEN
when you are unpacking the phone for the first time if you can bear it,leave on the plastic film that is put on before the phone leaves the factory.If you dont mind the tiny indicator that is in the top left corner it is completely transparent and if its good enuf for nokia then same for me.
Mine has been on for 2mths now and looks as new- no peeling or bubbles formed.This is however not a permanent solution but its an idea.

On newer models like the N96 thats not really an option because "N series" is printed on it, right across the middle.

Don't drop it or throw it in with a bag of rusty nails

Seriously I use the nice leather case that came with my E71 and I don't put it anywhere with objects that might scratch it. Crystal cases cause scratches.

i got a carrying case for nokia..by some SMART company. it is very good. and with n96 you can always put it on its stand...the one with the camera..so least surface touches the table etc.
