Nokia Generic FM radio cut-out problem

I've deliberately chosen to describe this problem as generic because my searches in the forums have found the issue in several different Nokia phones, but although there are suggestions for possible fixes, none is familiar with the problem so no-one has found a solution.

I’m having the problem with my 2730 Classic. The FM radio cuts out completely several times a minute for fixed periods.  The cut-out takes the form of total muting - no sound at all.  It happens in areas of strong or weak signal - it makes no difference. The cut-out is for 4 seconds at a time on some frequencies, 1 second at a time on another.  On yet another frequency it barely cuts out at all, just giving a click, while on some other frequencies it doesn't cut out at all. This can happen up to 4 times every minute, and occurs at irregular intervals.  The cut-out is for the same period every time, the variation is from one station to another.

I upgraded the firmware to the latest version, but it made no difference.

If anyone has encountered this and has found a solution, there will be a number of grateful Nokia owners on this forum!

Re: Nokia Generic FM radio cut-out problem

[ Edited ]

At last I seem to have solved this.

After posting this question here, I decided on the offchance to Google the subject line to see what came up.  Lo and behold, I found the answer in a non-Nokia forum.

If I go to the radio screen/Options/Settings/Auto-frequency change, and disable it, the cut-outs stop.  If this feature is enabled, the phone constantly scans for alternative frequencies and cuts out while it's doing so.  My 2730 Classic doesn't have fantastic reception at the best of times so it was constantly searching for a better signal, not finding it and returning.  The things I can't figure out is why it only started happening 18 months after I bought the phone, and why it continued happening just as often even when the signal was quite good.

Now there's one thing you have to remember - when you go to the Settings menu, if you see 'Auto-freq. change on', that means it's OFF, and if it says 'Auto-freq. change off', it means it's ON!  What could be more obvious!? Clicking on this legend reverses it.

You can confirm that the feature is disabled because it will be greyed out in the radio screen.

Re: Nokia Generic FM radio cut-out problem

Thanks Kermittoad, great fix. Had this problem on my N8 (and along with the BBC Iplayer fiasco nearly caused me to sell it ), but without the inverse logic of the switch. Mine was ON so RDS and AF on the screen. switched it off and now I 'm happy.........
