Hi there

Quick question.. I know the 5610 supports upto 4GB memory cards...but can it hold 4GB MicroSDHC cards or just the 4GB ones that nokia sells?

I find conflicting information on the web..

The info isn't very clear.

It supports SDHC. Some users have said that 8GB cards work, but only if they are a good quality brands like sandisk or kingston.

According to a post by psychomania earlier, the only 4gb micro sd cards are SDHC disregarding the brand.

This makes me think that they are compatible. I've also read somewhere that 8gb micro sd cards work in them. Although I suggest that you buy a Nokia micro sd card to ensure its compatibility.

Standard micro SD cards are only available in sizes up to 2GB. There are some cheap rubbish cards that claim to be 4GB SD but they do not work properly.

Micro cards that are 4GB or over are SDHC.

If you plan on buying an SDHC card make sure you buy a good brand. Cheaper unbranded or unknown brand cards are known to cause trouble in phones.

Just as an aside... just wondered if you guys could help with my other query?

When the light effects are switched ON, the lights on the slider bar flash continually all day and night, with 1 long pause. When I receive a message this changes to 2 shorter flashes.

However if you switch off the light effects it obviously never flashes.

My question is... is it not possible for the phone to flash ONLY when I have a message / missed call?

That's good although I insist that the 8gb one will work.

Your only options with the light effects are on or off.

Changing the standby and powersave settings may alter it's behaviour.

I turned the powersave off and it now works as I want it too. You sir are a legend!

If only the instructions told me this rather than me having to ask somebody on a forum... nice work nokia

Okay I bought a Kingston MicroSDHC 4gb card, class 4 card. It doesn't work properly in my 5610 xpress. Sometimes it shows as "unformatted", sometimes (very rarely) it shows as "Kingston" and shows the true 3.8gig format (just one folder "Music". When it shows as unformatted, i dont get an option to format the card. When it shows as kingston - i tried formating but just did it in about 0.5sec - dont think it worked. When it shows as kingston the phone is sluggish when it is accessing the card - and eventually freezes/ write errors/ stops recognising the card.

Is this card faulty?

Okay I guess I'm gonna need to speak to Nokia support about this. I got a replacement for the Kingston 4gig SDHC card - same model, this is what happened:

Put the card in the phone - all seems fine, card recognised as "KINGSTON", browsable (but nothing on it) - memory details showing as 32k used - 3.8gig available memory.

I set the camera to save files to memory card in the options and take a picture. I get an error message: "operation failed", then "camera in standby mode" - then the phone freezes - no buttons work, display is dark (although still working) - no response from the phone at all. Till about 5mins later it comes back to life. However now the memory card is showing as "unformatted" - BUT WITH NO OPTION AVAILABLE TO FORMAT.

If I take the card out and re-insert it without switching off the phone - it makes the phone not work properly - trying to access any menus with contain a reference to the memory card will simply not open (eg: Gallery, Applications).

If I switch the phone off and on with the memory card already installed, it calls the memory card "memory card" and shows as unformatted BUT WITH NO OPTION TO FORMAT, as above.

Seems very much to me that this card is NOT compatible with a 5610 .

I just got a Kingston 4gb SDHC card yesterday for my 5610 and it doesn't work. The problem is exactly as described by indrasnet

The card works fine in my Zen Media Player (using the included adapter) but not in my nokia phone. Therefore, the 5610 doesn't support this card.

Time and money wasted.

Hey.

I also have a 5610, and I bought a 8gb MicroSDHC from Sandisk, works like a charm.

There are a few downsizes to it, though. The phone is definately sluggish on startup and when accessing the memory card, and it only reports it as having 3.6gb, but accesses the full 8gb contents (if it doesn't recognize the card at first, just give it 30 minutes, it really takes its time reading those 8gb).

About the formatting problem, I just copied everything (meaning the directory tree) from the 1gb card that comes with the phone, and it accepts it as formatted.

I also had the "operation failed", then "camera in standby mode" problem. Here's how I solved it: set your camera settings to save the pictures to the phone memory, then restart your phone, start the camera and set the settings back to the memory card. Should fix it.

Oh, and mattdanielc, thanks for the tip on the slidebar lights. That thing blinking all night and day was driving me nuts. Much better just blinking when something actually happened.

Last, I'd like to make a formal complaint against the 5610 manual. It plainly SUCKS. The phone has so many functions and gadgets and the manual only covers the very basic functionality (and even that not well). I'm used to the print manual being a quickstart, but the online version should be comprehensive, after all I'm paying for this, and not that cheaply.

I have the exacly same problem that yours with my Nokia 5610 and an find way to solve this.

I open my Kingston MicroSDHC 4gb on my laptop with an Windows Vista and format the card with FAT filesystem, note that original filesystem is FAT32.

After this, I put the memory on my phone and in the first moment I format the memory card again like instructions in User Guide.

After this, I connect my phone to my computer and create all folders in memory card like ones in memory phone.

Well, its done and working fine! I dont now with all this steps are required but some in case...

I tried the same thing and it worked just perfect. I formatted my Kingston 4Gb card using Windows Vista, copied the same folder structure from my original Nokia 512 MB card and IT SPRANG BACK TO LIFE. But I formatted the card in FAT32 and not FAT. So it's not mandatory that the file system needs to be the latter. FAT32 works just fine.
Thanks to all the guys who have posted their tips out here, it it weren't for you guys I would have dumped my 4GB card just like that. Thanks a million again.

i wish I'd never bought the 5610. I'm heavily disappointed in it.
Music quality isn't that great. camera is worse than i expected. starts falling apart sometimes.

Ive had it since Christmas and heavily regretted not getting a Sony erricsonn.

anyone else disappointed in the 5610?

Come on man, the 5610 is one of the coolest music phones available in the market today. With dashing looks and not so bad performance, it's definitely worth flaunting. Nokia's cameras will never be as good as those Sony phones out there, but the one that comes with the 5610 is pretty decent. I have had mine since January, and I have had no serious issues with it so far, besides the memory card upgradation issue which i have mentioned above. The build of the phone might seem a little brittle, but then so are most slider phones. 5610 on the whole seems to be cool phone to own.
