Hi
I have owned my Nokia N86 since July 09; what a great mobile phone apart from its appalling battery life. The tech specs say 15 days but I only get 3 days standby at most even as a very very light user. Often the battery life will drop instantly from ½ bars to zero when I open a GPS app.
I have set up all the power saving options mentioned in other thread but I have identified an issue with the battery draining Packet Data from Vodafone. I end packet data, by holding the red key, each time I close the sider & the packet data symbol below the signal strength bar goes away. However, when I open the slider & unlock the phone I notice the Packet Data is turned back on.
My Packet Data is set up for 'when needed'; unlocking the slider does not mean I need it! Has anyone found a way around this & is my battery life as bad as other peoples? I can’t afford to own a phone which will die on me just as I need to make an urgent call.
Cheers
As an aside when will Nokia finally update its firmware so when I close a program it actually closes & does not go into the background wasting battery life! ![]()

PROBLEM IDENTIFIED BUT NOT SOLVED.
I took my N86 into a Nokia Care Center and found the source of my poor battery life and why packet data keeps turning back on after I turn it off:
'Vodafone Internet GPRS keeps reconnecting automatically as it is set for 3G. Other mobile networks allow you to turn 3G off when not needed.'
Found by: settings-connection-destinations-internet-vodafone internet GPRS.
So the ball of blame is now in Vodafones court to change their software & let users deselect 3G when required. Nokia still need to fix the firmware so battery drain/gauge is more accurate & linear.
Any work arounds would be appreciated as at the moment this issue has reduced my battery life by ~80%.
Cheers
