Is there GPS software for the 8600?

It would be handy to get the street map function that you get with other models, does it cost much if there is?

Cheers

Re: Is there GPS software for the 8600?

Nokia maps can be loaded onto any S40 device including the 8600 but you cannot use the GPS tracking functions as that device does not have the hardware.
The 8*** series are more fashion /posing devices rather than serious user devices and as such the hardware relates to that .
For advanced features like GPS you are looking at N Series ,E series and some 6*** series (namely 6110 N, 6210 N and 6220 C)
All of the above are marketed towards the serious phone users and business class market rather than the "make a few calls and look good" class.
If installing programs like Nokia Maps you must bear in mind that the 8600/8800 have only limited inbuilt memory and no card reader so it may take up a large portion of customer user memory

Unfortunately that is incorrect.

An installable version of Nokia Maps is only available for Nokia's S60 smartphones. The only series 40 phones that support Nokia maps are those that have it as part of their firmware.

Alternatives for series 40 phones are programs like google maps and nav4all. Both require an external GPS to function fully.

my apologies I thought the stand alone version of S40 Nokia maps was already out for customer use :smileyfrustrated:
In which case check SW updates for your S40 device as it may be pre-installed on the later Sw

Re: Is there GPS software for the 8600?

From what i've heard nokia has no plans to release maps for existing series 40 models. It will only be available on select newer models.

If you have information that shows that they will be releasing it please feel free to share.

Re: Is there GPS software for the 8600?

It may be that they have decided to only release it in the firmware of new models or Major data package updates for existing models as it has been a little while since my last conversation involving S40 Nokia maps at which time the plan was to hopefully make it a stand alone program.
I'll be honest and admit I tend not to keep upto date on SW developments for S40 as much as I do for S60 these days

Re: Is there GPS software for the 8600?

Fair enough.

For the record it has not been added to any existing series 40 model via a firmware update or installable file.

Somebody needs to give the Betalabs guys a quick kick up the backside then :smileytongue:
I dare say the main concern is completing Nokia Maps 3.0 (S60) right now .
The S40 platform is not as program rich as it once was now that S60 has become more stable and open source

Re: Is there GPS software for the 8600?

Isn't the hardware and lack of memory on many series 40 phones also a limiting factor?

Personally I don't think it's ever going to happen for existing models.

Re: Is there GPS software for the 8600?

the lack of memory will certainly be a factor but even the 6300 runs a 4GB card albeit a bit slowly and the 6500s runs it quite easily.
The biggest issues will probably be RAM memory and those with built in drives as they are non expandable.
I'm sure the SW devs will sort something out.
The inner workings of SW programs are a bit beyond my knowledge base as a spanner monkey :smileywink:

Re: Is there GPS software for the 8600?

I suppose all we can do is wait an see.

They have done a good job with the series 40 version. I used it a few weeks ago on a 6600f as a map book and was impressed.

Re: Is there GPS software for the 8600?

I'm glad they have continued to create programs for S40 as I firmly believe there is still a market for them .
The 6600s is quite a nice little phone too and easy to navigate for those that don't want all of the frills of a N or E series device and the complexities of S60
Cheers for the conversation chap :smileyhappy:
