Hi, I am a new member to this community. I wish to buy a new Nokia phone but one requirement that I have is that when a contact on my phone calls me, I should be able to see the name of the contact and the number from which he/she is calling (assuming that we are able to save more than 1 number per contact). In fact, I have seen this on Sony Ericsson phones.

Is this feature available on Nokia phones, either the business phones or the N-series phones? Or can it be availed of by installing some service pack or upgrade to the OS? Please advice.

This feature is available on most Nokia phones and all N and E Series Nokia phones and some will even "say" the callers name if you want it to.

Thanks for that prompt reply, cjlim. I had a N70 with me for a couple of months but I couldn't find an option wherein I could set this. By default, it was displaying just the Contact Name when the contact called. So, if the contact has 2-3 numbers saved in the same name, I could not distinguish which number he/she is calling from and hence, thought of this.

Is there any setting that I need to change to get this done?

You are right in that only the name is displayed, not the number.

However, if you have, for example, a home number and a mobile number for a contact, provided each number is labelled correctly you will see the corresponding icon alongside the name when that number calls you.

e.g. both my home landline and my partner's mobile are stored in the same contact. If I'm called by the mobile then a "mobile phone" icon appears alongside the name of the contact. If it's the landline calling me then an icon like a telephone with an old rotary dial appears by the contact name.

Unfortunately this distinction doesn't extend to the call log. All entries have the "mobile phone" icon.

Thanks for the reply, grschinon. I have heard, again not sure, that the N95 has this option to display the contact name and the number from which the call is being made. Could you please confirm if that is so and if so, are there any other models that share this feature?

Again, taking to consideration other models, is this in-availability of the feature due to the feature being lacking from Nokia's version of the phone OS (I have seen almost all Sony Ericsson phones displaying the contact name and number, hence this query). Any idea on this?

The N95 and the N96 both display the name and the number.

The N73 does not.

Thanks again, grschinon. That has added to my doubt. All these phones that u mentioned, N73, N95 and N96, all are S60 based phones. In that case, is there any service pack kind of thing that is the difference between them and if yes, cant that be installed on other phones to achieve our requirement?

I think the different N Series models all have minor variations. I wouldn't be surprised if N95's or N96's with different Product Codes displayed names and numbers differently.

However, the main thing here is the fact that it does. The "say caller name" is useful when driving but can be embarassing when in a meeting.

The N73, N95 and N96 are all S60 3rd edition phones. However, the N95 has feature pack 1 and the N96 feature pack 2. I'm guessing that this is available on all S60v2 FP1 and later phones. Perhaps others could confirm?

The feature packs are not available as installable add-ons.

Themes are the first thing that comes to mind.

Those designed for FP1 phones don't handle the middle selection key's colour correctly on FP2 phones. I have first hand experience of this with a load of themes for my N95 that exhibit this problem on my N96.

Another example of incompatibility is the recently-released beta of Share Online 4.0, which only works so far on a handful of FP2 phones.

They should have called them different names to avoid confusion. S60, S70 and S80 or something like that would have been more appropriate. Instead the FP1 and FP2 gives the same impression as when your are going from Windows XP SP1 to SP2 to SP3 where it is more or less the same and contains only bug fixes.

Sorry to butt in, You can download 3rd party app calld full screen caller where you can put a photo of the person alongside the name and the phone number. You can even change the colour of the text. Try ggogling it and see what comes up for your phone model or one you have your eye on.

That's a useful piece of software. However, the requirement here is not to identify the contact calling (display of the name alone achieves that already) but to distinguish between multiple numbers belonging to the same contact.

Yep, you can show the number of the phone that is calling. Can you identify it any better than that???

Thanks for all your suggestions. Just thought of giving an update on this article. I just came across 3 models of Nokia that have this feature to show the contact name and number. They are the 6233, 3210 and 1650. The 1650 cannot store more than one number per contact but still, it shows the name and number of a contact calling.

This being the scenario, why isn't this feature enabled on higher end phones? Can anyone please throw some light on this?
