6600 Fold - Help Please.

Hi All,

I am facing a problem.
Its rather small thankfully.

I just bought my brand new 6600 Fold yesterday, and was playing about with it, when I came across in the Manual about the lighting, and how it can be linked to missed calls and notifications etc... At the moment the light just flashes every 6-8 seconds, for no reason (I checked and there were no missed calls or any notifications).

I checked the manual carefully, and it says that there is an options tab in the Lights Tab, but with my phone, there is no options, under the lights tab, only the 'On' and 'Off'. Therefore I can not assign the lights to do anything except flash for no reason.

I updated the phones firmware using the Nokia Software updater, and it all went fine, and the phone is up and running again, but there were no changes, all the options are still the same.

Please advise if anyone else is facing this same problem?
Or do I just have to go back to Nokia to get a new phone, and possibly that will be okay?

Oh yeah, I am writing in from Dubai UAE, and I bought my phone from Nokia themselves. So I know there is no problem, in exchanging it for a new one...
But if this is just a software problem, I would rather fix it, than getting a new one.

Thanks a lot to everyone for all their ideas.

Nick

Re: 6600 Fold - Help Please.

there seems to be no need to take the phone back. recent phones from nokia seem to all feature this lighting effect (i myself have a 5610). the light on mine flashes in and out every six to eight seconds also, but i have turned this off. what you need to do is first goto Settings > Lights, and select Off. then goto Settings > Display > Power Saver, and set this to On. if you set Power Saver to off, then the phone will just flash in and out when it feels like it. after you have done this, turn your phone back and off again to make sure the phone knows that you changed your settings. the lights should now be off.

Re: 6600 Fold - Help Please.

I just got back from Nokia, they accepted to take the phone back, although the sales people there did not have a clue what I was talking nor when I quoted what was written from the manual on page 31.
In any case, as they were giving me a new phone, I asked if I could test it, to see if the feature was there or not.
And to my surprize it wasnt there on that phone either.
Which means there is something wrong here.

Because even in the manual, it says the phone has the feature / option.

Thanks Adrian, I tried it, but this phone doesnt have a power saver mode... anywhere...

Hopefully someone out there knows what needs to be done, its looking more and more like a software glitch, but the funny thing, is that I updated the firmware, which should have fixed this.

But the most important thing, is that since this option is given in the manual, one would think it has to be there on the phone post sending these phones out to be sold.
Oh well, I was given a number of the Nokia customer service, so I will try them, and see if they know what I am talking about...

Re: 6600 Fold - Help Please.

the lighting effect is profile dependant, which means if you want to change the lighting effect and it's associations with different events you have to go to :
settings->profiles->personalise

and change the settings for the profile you have active now.
it's true that the settings->lights->lighting effect only has the on and off option because it was intended to switch on or off the effects in the cative profile only.

Re: 6600 Fold - Help Please.

yes the Light Effects settings turning that on is exactly the same as turning on the Lights option in the active profile, as you have repeatedly said Asem305 :smileywink:

strange that the lights are no longer displaying in your phone though.... i don't know what that is about, maybe someone can shed some light on this?

Hi Everyone,

I spoke with the customer service, and the guy had no idea, finally he told me he will call me back, when he has the phone infront of him, so that he can check what I was saying.

Hi Asem, yes you are correct, the lighting is profile dependant, but in the profile, the lighting is active.
In the settings, the lights is active. Oh yeah, please note the light works, its just that it flashs every 6 or 8 secodns for no reason, IE no missed call, no message, I think just to show it is on...
But it does not make sense that Nokia would make a phone with a light, which only randomly flashes for no reason, there has to be a link where you can assign it to flash only for a missed call, or message, similar to the E61i, and even some other models of Nokia, which uses blue flashing lights on the side (i cant remember the number).

In the manual, printed and given with the phone, along with online, on Page 31, and I quote:
Lights
Select Menu > Settings > Lights > Light effects to turn lights on or off indicating standby mode, missed events, alarms and reminders, calls, and low battery level.
Light effects settings are profile dependent. Changing light settings effects only the currently activated profile.
Select Menu > Settings > Lights to activate or deactivate light effects associated with different phone functions.

The option I am looking for, which apparently does not exist is the 'Light effects' which is clearly mentioned, where by the user can choose to activate the light inconjunction with standby mode, missed events, alarms and reminders, calls, and low battery level. Therefore, I dont understand why this link or setting is missing.

Hopefully tomorrow when Nokia calls me back, they will have an answer. I quoted the page and the problem, I just hope they take it seriously. And I wonder how many other people have this same problem.

Re: 6600 Fold - Help Please.

are you sure you don't have a Power Saver function in your phone? because i have a 5610 and my lights flash every six to eight seconds, even if i do not have missed call/sms because i left the Power Saver function on. whenever i turn the power saver off, the lights flash for incoming calls, sms, missed sms etc. the Light Settings are profile dependent in my case too, but i am easily able to turn them off should i wish. try and have a closer look at the menus in your phone and see if there are any other options regarding Power Saving or light effects.

Re: 6600 Fold - Help Please.

Hi Adrian,

Yes I am sure the power saver feature is not there.

I finally got a reply from Nokia Customer Service, and they have told me that my phone, the 6600 Fold is supposed to have this 'Light Effects' feature in the 'Lights' menu, only the 6600 slide, does not have this feature.

And his suggestion is to take the phone back to Nokia to get it replaced and update the software.

Well I have taken my phone back, but all the other phones were exactly the same, I have updated the software, and its still the same problem.

So now I am wondering if it is possible for Nokia to have installed the 6600 slide software on the 6600 fold phone?
What do you think?

Re: 6600 Fold - Help Please.

sounds like a remote possibility, but i really don't think they would slip up like that. it seems like they may have made a mistake with your particular phone, or there has been an inherent defect with the hardware of your phone :smileysad:. i would haggle to get a replacement if the issue cannot be fixed, after all, when you are paying for a phone, you should expect full functionality to occur.

Re: 6600 Fold - Help Please.

Hi Ash,

The price of the phone is AED 1,711.00

So far no faults except this light issue, everything else works fine.

Mind you I use to be a hardcore Business phone user, with all the E series, please note, this phone is no where like the business phones, the functions are more relaxed, and less ordered.

Re: 6600 Fold - Help Please.

Well, finally I spoke with 3 different people at Nokia, and only 1 realized what the problem was, and 100% agreed with me. Then the funny thing was that he told me to put it in writing so that something can be done, I told him, I have already sent a complaint in to the Nokia customer service online, and they still cant understand... so it seems I am at square one again.

Incase, for information, the things I am looking for are:
Play with lights
Did you know that you can adjust the lights signalling of phone activity? You can either activate or if you want, deactivate light effects. To do that, select Menu > Settings > Lights to see the functions in which light seffects are associated and to adjust the effects.

this is as per the nokia online 'tips and tricks' for the 6600 fold, all I want to do is change the funtions that is associated with the lights, but i dont even get a menu to show me the associations. therefore i can assign anything.

I think I will have to take this to Nokia Finland or something, for this to get fixed.
Talk about customer service, no one wants to admit there is a problem, and the one person that does, wants everything in writing, i am guessing because he doesnt want to do the work of reporting to his manager.

This is the FIRST time I have ever had a problem with Nokia, after around 11 phones I have bought from them.

Hej

Sorry my very bad English, but I´m deaf and live i Sweden. I had an Nokia 6600 fold (bought 25 sep) and I like this phone very much. But in conformity with nviegas I had problem with the lighting. It´s okey that this light tell me about videocalls and notifications with short signals (every 2-3 sekonds) but if I had open an SMS, and later close the phone the light begin flashes very irrating every 6-8 seconds for no reason. In addition the lamp is very strong and it´s impossible to had the phone in my dark bedrom. But now I had finding, that if I first open and read an SMS and directly reply this SMS it will not later begin flashes. I had also finding that the light sometimes die out by itself for no reson. So i think the problem is a bugg. I had today write to the Nokia customer service in Sweden about this (on swedish of course:smileyhappy:
) but i had not got an answer yet.

Re: 6600 Fold - Help Please.

Hi Surdo,

Yes, this is exactly what I am talking about, that annoying light which can light up a dark room, quite well I might add.

It is very strange that Nokia has put a light which is always flashing, especially since, they have never done that with any of their previous phones.

I think this is just a mistake on the part of Nokia, everywhere in the world.

I hope they rectify the situation soon.

I have finally spoken to someone in Nokia who acutally understood, and he has 'assured me' that a formal complaint will be lodged with Nokia, as when it will actually be seen if ever, will be up in the air...
So far, all that I have is a name from the Nokia Cutomer Care Line...

Even though I did ask to be kept in the loop as to what is happening.. Oh well, if all else fails looks like I might just give up on Nokia... end up going BACK to the Iphone...
That is if, Nokia doesnt get its act together, they will be loosing a lot of customers...

Hello Nviegas!

Now I have got a answer from Nokia Customer Service in Sweden about the lighting problem at 6600 fold. They say the question now is investigated on Nokias headdevelopment division in Finland. Certainly they come a upgrade in a short time.

Re: 6600 Fold - Help Please.

Hi Surdo,

I too was told by Customer Service, that there was a problem, and that they would be sending an official complaint to the Nokia technical team...

Mind you on the next day, I got an email from Nokia Customer Care, explaining how to put the light on, and then how to use the tap function.

Well you know what they say, pay peanuts, get monkeys.

I just wrote another email to them, and this time I copied in the 'quality control centre', lets see if anything actually happens, or if it just goes round in circles.

Re: 6600 Fold - Help Please.

Hi,

Could you inform this message threat as soon as you get answers from the customer support? Or if you find out that they've released an update..?

I just got my 6600 Fold yesterday and I noticed the same problem with the lights.. This phone would be just perfect if the lights would indicate missed calls or messages.. Now it's just useless..
