Yes, it's just you who think it's a little odd. Everybody else thinks it's bloody stupid. But not odd, because it's consisent with the rest of Nokia's behaviour right now.
To compete with the whole iPhone / iTunes ethos, Nokia / Ovi are desperately trying to pull together a bunch of online utilities into a homogenous suite.
To be fair. I'm using the "Sync" facilities more and more ; phone / pc : phone / ovi.com. It IS coming together nicely as far as the web component is concerned. Especially the online "Maps" which I love. I now plan my journeys on my laptop and sync and save them to my phone.
The address book / contacts issue is ridiculous. Why the mail app doesn't use the nicely synced Contacts, I've no idea. I do hope they're working on it.

Looks like they did finally do something about it:
Logged in to mine and the address book is there.

I think it's messed up.
When I logged into OVI Mail I was shown a screen which clearly stated that my OV Sync'ed contacts' e-mail addresses were now in my OVI Mail address book. When I looked at my OVI Mail address book, there were just a few addresses that I'd added manually and none of the other e-mail addresses from my OVI Sync contacts.

Actually, I managed to sync mine. Just downloaded the Ovi Mail app into my phone and they synced on their own...I dunno. It just happened. One minute my contacts still werent fully in my Ovi Mail account, then when I was sending mail a little while later, they were there.
